Audemars Piguet says the second balance wheel and balance-spring assembly shares the first’s axis and is intended to improve stability and precision. The brand’s published specifications establish what is in the watch; they do not independently demonstrate a timekeeping advantage.
What the double balance wheel describes
A balance wheel and its hairspring act as a movement’s timing regulator. In its description of the 41 mm Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked, Audemars Piguet says the defining arrangement is a second balance wheel and balance-spring assembly fixed on the same axis as the first. The brand states that the patented geometry tackles stabilising issues and improves precision and stability. That is AP’s explanation of the design, not a result established by comparative timekeeping tests in the cited material.
Phillips’ catalogue essay describes the positional concern behind the design: a watch’s rate can be affected by the orientation of a movement with one balance and hairspring. It describes the 15407’s solution as two superimposed balance wheels, each with its own hairspring. This helps explain the architecture, but it does not establish that the watch is immune to positional variation or more accurate in everyday wear.
What is visible through the openworked movement
Openworking removes much of the solid dial and movement material that would otherwise conceal the mechanism, making the movement visible from the dial side. AP specifically says the mechanism can be seen from both sides on the documented 37 mm pink-gold version. That description applies to that listed version; it should not be treated as a complete specification for every reference.

Phillips’ catalogue describes the 15407 movement’s bridges as ruthenium-coated, with a golden balance bridge, and notes hand-finishing on the pink-gold balance bridge. Those are catalogue descriptions of the example and finishing discussed there, rather than a universal finishing specification for every variant.

How the 37 mm gold references differ
AP also documents 37 mm versions in pink gold and white gold. They show that the design appears in different sizes and metals; they are examples, not an exhaustive list of past or current references.
