The Grand Seiko SLGA009 is the Spring Drive 5 Days version of the White Birch watch, part of the Evolution 9 Collection and powered by Caliber 9RA2. Grand Seiko states about 120 hours of power reserve and accuracy of ±10 seconds per month (±0.5 second per day). Whether it suits you comes down to wrist fit, budget, taste for its dial, and whether you value Spring Drive’s mix of mainspring power and electronic regulation. This guide gives the manufacturer’s numbers and a way to test them against your own wrist.
What the SLGA009 is
Grand Seiko’s official SLGA009 page (a regional Middle East page) lists it as an Evolution 9 Collection Spring Drive 5 Days model. The dial is described as evoking the white birch forests near the Shinshu Watch Studio, where Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive watchmaking is based.
Grand Seiko’s 2022 launch announcement says: “The ‘White Birch’ timepieces, both high-beat and Spring Drive, form the new Evolution 9 Collection starting in February 2022.” It names the SLGA009 as the Spring Drive model and the SLGH005 as the high-beat companion, offering a different interpretation of the same forests.

The 120-hour and ±0.5 second per day figures also appeared in the 2022 launch announcement, so they have been stable since release. The 10 bar rating is a specification, not a guarantee for any particular activity or for an individual watch whose seals have aged. Ask an authorized service center before treating an older watch as water-ready.
How Spring Drive works, in plain terms
A mainspring powers the watch, and a quartz-based electronic system regulates it. Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive instructions put it this way: “The Spring Drive is a self-contained drive system that realizes accuracy equivalent to a quartz watch with only the power of the mainspring and has no battery, motor, or secondary battery.” That is the manufacturer’s description of the general system. So the SLGA009 is not a battery quartz watch, and it is not a conventional escapement mechanical watch either.
SLGA009 vs SLGH005
Grand Seiko offers two White Birch interpretations: the SLGA009 with Spring Drive and the SLGH005 with Hi-Beat. The useful points of comparison are:
- Movement type: Spring Drive versus high-beat mechanical.
- Manufacturer-stated accuracy and power reserve.
- Case and bracelet dimensions.
- Your local price and availability.

Will it fit you? A practical check
Diameter alone doesn’t settle fit. Compare all three listed dimensions with a watch you already wear:
- Measure your current watch’s diameter, lug-to-lug length and thickness.
- Set them beside 40.0 mm, 47.9 mm and 11.8 mm. Lug-to-lug matters most on smaller wrists; thickness matters under a fitted cuff.
- Check that your strap or bracelet preferences work with a 22 mm band width.
- If you can, try it on at an authorized retailer before deciding.

Is it the one for you?
It is likely a good fit if you want a quiet, textured white dial, a five-day reserve, and the manufacturer’s stated accuracy without a battery. Consider other options if you prefer a conventional mechanical movement (the SLGH005 is the White Birch alternative), if the dimensions don’t suit your wrist, or if the local price is beyond your budget. No independent timing results or long-term owner reports have been established for this model, so accuracy and durability claims rest on Grand Seiko’s published figures.
