Grand Seiko’s “Birch” watches are related white-birch-inspired models, not an officially defined catalog family. They share a dial theme but differ in movement, winding, case material and proportions: the SLGH005 is a high-beat automatic, the SLGA009 is an automatic Spring Drive, the SLGW003 is a slim manual-winding titanium watch, and the SLGB009 combines the birch motif with Spring Drive U.F.A.
What connects the Grand Seiko Birch watches?
The connection is the dial inspiration. Grand Seiko says the SLGH005’s silvery textured dial expresses white birch forests near its Shizukuishi mechanical-watch studio. For the SLGA009, the brand points to forests near the Shinshu Spring Drive studio and describes a quieter forest mood. These are the maker’s stated inspirations, not a formal “Birch family” catalog designation. Grand Seiko’s SLGH005 product page, SLGA009 product page and 2021 White Birch announcement explain the design context.
The theme extends to later related references, including the manual-winding SLGW003 and Spring Drive U.F.A. SLGB009. Each has its own movement and case format, so the dial motif is a useful way to group them visually, not a shortcut for choosing among them.
How do the four Birch references compare?
The figures below are manufacturer specifications. Grand Seiko’s stated accuracy figures are not independent test results. In particular, the mechanical models’ mean daily rate and normal-use accuracy are separate figures as presented on their official pages.

SLGH005 or SLGA009: high-beat mechanical or Spring Drive?
SLGH005: automatic high-beat mechanical
The SLGH005 is the more explicitly high-beat choice. Its automatic Caliber 9SA5 runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour and has an approximately 80-hour reserve. The stainless-steel case measures 40.0 mm across and 11.7 mm thick, with 47.0 mm lug-to-lug length. Grand Seiko specifies 10-bar water resistance. Its dial inspiration is tied to the white birch forests near the Shizukuishi studio.
SLGA009: automatic Spring Drive
The SLGA009 uses Caliber 9RA2, an automatic Spring Drive movement, and has the longest stated reserve among these four references: approximately 120 hours. Grand Seiko states accuracy of ±10 seconds per month, equivalent to ±0.5 second per day, and provides a power-reserve indicator. Its stainless-steel case is also 40.0 mm in diameter, but measures 47.9 mm lug-to-lug and 11.8 mm thick; water resistance is 10 bar. The extra 0.9 mm of lug-to-lug length compared with the SLGH005 may matter to some wrists.
What do the SLGW003 and SLGB009 add?
SLGW003: slimmer manual-winding titanium
The SLGW003 shifts the emphasis from an automatic movement to manual winding. Its Caliber 9SA4 is mechanical and has an approximately 80-hour reserve. The Brilliant Hard Titanium case is the smallest and thinnest of the four listed here: 38.6 mm in diameter, 45.0 mm lug-to-lug and 9.95 mm thick. Grand Seiko describes it as splash resistant, rather than listing a bar rating, and pairs it with a crocodile leather strap. Its official page presents the model’s dial as part of the white-birch design thread.

SLGB009: Spring Drive U.F.A.
The SLGB009 uses automatic Spring Drive Caliber 9RB2, identified by Grand Seiko as Spring Drive U.F.A. The stated accuracy is ±20 seconds per year (±3 seconds per month), with approximately 72 hours of reserve. Its Ever-Brilliant Steel case measures 40.0 mm in diameter, 47.2 mm lug-to-lug and 11.7 mm thick; water resistance is 10 bar. The official page also notes a micro-adjustment clasp.
How does Evolution 9 relate to the Birch design?
Evolution 9 describes a design lineage, not a movement type shared by every Birch-inspired watch. Grand Seiko traces the style to its 1967 Grand Seiko Style and says the SLGH005 helped crystallize design elements that were later extracted as Evolution 9 design codes. The brand’s explanation discusses prominent hands and markers, finishing and legibility. The Evolution 9 design explanation also discusses the SLGA009, while the SLGH005 feature page describes its design language. Collection terminology varies by page: the SLGH005 product page uses “Evolution 9,” while its feature page uses “Series 9” and “Heritage Collection.”

Which Birch watch fits your priorities?
- Choose by movement: the SLGH005 is automatic high-beat mechanical; the SLGA009 is automatic Spring Drive; the SLGW003 is manual-winding mechanical; and the SLGB009 is automatic Spring Drive U.F.A.
- Choose by stated reserve: the SLGA009 leads at approximately 120 hours; the SLGH005 and SLGW003 each state approximately 80 hours; the SLGB009 states approximately 72 hours.
- Choose by case format: the SLGW003 is smaller and thinner on paper and uses titanium. The other three are 40.0 mm across, with differences in lug-to-lug length, thickness and steel type.
- Check water resistance against use: three models list 10 bar, while the SLGW003 is listed as splash resistant. These descriptions are not interchangeable.
- Try for fit where possible: diameter alone does not establish how a watch will wear. Lug-to-lug length, thickness, case shape and strap or bracelet affect the result on an individual wrist.
Specifications and availability can vary by region and change over time. Check the current local product listing before purchase; the published dimensions cannot determine personal fit, and the figures above do not establish performance beyond the manufacturer’s stated specifications.
