Hajime Asaoka’s watches make more sense when viewed through his earlier work as a product designer: their appeal lies not only in complications, but in the way the case, dial and movement are conceived as a coherent object. His small atelier collection includes the three-hand Tsunami, tourbillons and a chronograph. Kurono Tokyo is a separate label created to offer a more accessible, faster-to-obtain alternative to his limited hand-built atelier watches.
Who is Hajime Asaoka?
Asaoka is a Tokyo-based independent watchmaker whose route into watchmaking began in product design. A watchmaker directory says he studied design at Tokyo University of the Arts, established a product design office and began making watches in 2005. The directory also reports that he introduced Japan’s first wristwatch with an in-house tourbillon movement in 2009 and began selling watches under his own name in 2011. Those milestones are the directory’s account of his history, rather than independently verified archival records. Watchmaker directory profile
A 2019 profile describes Asaoka as self-taught. It says he learned through online tutorials and machine tools, and that George Daniels’ book Watchmaking was among his influences. That background helps explain the blend of design thinking and hands-on mechanical work in his watches; the sources do not describe him as having formal horological training. Quill & Pad profile
What makes the atelier watches distinctive?
Asaoka’s product-design background is visible in the emphasis on the whole watch rather than complication alone. The available profiles describe attention to both exterior and movement design, with Art Deco a recurring reference in the early work. The 2023 coverage of Tourbillon Noir specifically identifies it as a continuation of that style. Fratello Watches on Tourbillon Noir

The manufacturing account from a 2013 interview offers a specific example of how Asaoka worked on the watch discussed there. He said: “All parts are made in Japan (except for a few minor parts), designed and assembled in-house.” He added that a small Tokyo-area factory machined the case and that he performed its finishing. This is an account of that watch and conversation, not a guarantee that every later reference used identical sourcing or production methods. WatchProSite interview
Which Hajime Asaoka watches are notable?
| Model | What the sources establish |
|---|---|
| Tsunami | Three-hand watch with a full-plate movement. Quill & Pad reported a 37 mm stainless-steel case, manual winding, 40-hour power reserve and 18,000 vph for the version covered in its 2019 profile. It also described a German-silver dial base and exhibition caseback. These details are specific to that coverage, not necessarily every Tsunami reference. Quill & Pad profile |
| Project T / Project-T Tourbillon | A tourbillon design distinguished by the directory’s description of ball bearings in place of ruby jewel bearings. This is an architectural choice; the available sources do not establish that it delivers superior timekeeping. Watchmaker directory models |
| Tourbillon Pura | Listed among Asaoka’s tourbillon work. The available reference-specific information is too limited to make claims about its materials, movement details or performance. Watchmaker directory models |
| Chronograph | Described by the directory as based on the Tsunami movement with an added chronograph module. It shows how Asaoka extended an established movement architecture with a complication. Watchmaker directory models |
| Tourbillon Noir | Fratello’s April 2023 article describes a 37 mm model that continues Asaoka’s Art Deco style. That article documents launch-era context, not present production or availability. Fratello Watches on Tourbillon Noir |
How scarce are the watches?
Published production figures are historical snapshots, not current output. Quill & Pad reported in 2019 that Asaoka made about five timepieces per year at that time, and that fewer than ten Tsunami examples had been made as of late 2018. Fratello’s 2023 article reported a historical count of 18 watches by 2018 across the Tsunami, Project T and Chronograph. These are publication-reported figures with different scopes; without a primary production ledger, they should not be reconciled into a single total or projected forward. How is Kurono Tokyo related to Hajime Asaoka?
Kurono Tokyo is a separate label associated with Asaoka, not another name for his hand-built atelier collection. Its official about page presents the label as an answer to the limited output and cost of the atelier watches: the aim was to make a high-quality daily watch more accessible and faster to obtain. Asaoka’s stated rationale there is: “Personally, I want a high-quality, reliable, and reasonably priced watch that can be worn as a daily driver.” This expresses his intention for Kurono; it is not an independent assessment of quality or a current delivery promise. How much do Hajime Asaoka watches cost, and are they available?
The sources cited here do not establish current prices, stock, wait times or authorized seller status for either the atelier watches or Kurono Tokyo. Historical production figures explain why Asaoka’s atelier watches are seldom encountered, but they cannot confirm present availability. For a purchase decision, check current information directly with the official brand or a seller whose authorization can be verified.
Is a Hajime Asaoka watch worth considering?
Asaoka is most compelling to readers interested in independent watchmaking as designed and built objects: his product-design background, full-plate Tsunami and unusual ball-bearing tourbillon architecture give the collection a distinct point of view. The evidence supports a discussion of design, construction and historical production context, but not a ranking against other watches for accuracy, reliability, finishing quality or value. Those comparisons would require reference-specific inspection or measurements that the cited sources do not provide.
