A modern watch tied to Hamilton’s Lancaster beginnings
Hamilton says it was founded in Lancaster in 1892 and began making pocket watches there. Its company history describes a period when railroad timekeeping lacked a common method and says the precision of Hamilton watches helped address the need for reliable time. That is Hamilton’s account of its role; the company does not quantify a reduction in accidents.
The connection is more than a date printed on an anniversary story. A Smithsonian National Museum of American History collection record documents a Hamilton-made watch movement from Lancaster dating to about 1907 and associates the watch with Henry Gilbert “Doc” Wells, a Southern Railroad engineer. The artifact offers a specific historical link between the company’s Lancaster production and railroad use.
Hamilton’s February 2022 anniversary release also describes the company’s early relationship with railroads, characterizing the industry as relying on Hamilton in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. That broad characterization is Hamilton’s, rather than an independently quantified assessment.

What the 130th Anniversary edition includes
Hamilton announced the Railroad Pocket Watch on October 20, 2022, as a limited edition of 917 pieces. The number refers to the former factory address at 917 Columbia Avenue in Lancaster. Swatch Group’s archive release also records the edition size and its address inspiration.

Dial design: railroad cues in a large format
The announced dial is white and enamel-like, with oversized Arabic numerals, black lacquered hands, and small seconds at six o’clock. Red five-minute markings and a fully graduated outer minute track give the face its railroad-inspired character. The design favors a highly marked, easy-to-read layout, though its visual effect and legibility in person cannot be assessed from specifications alone.
At 50 mm across, the case is substantial by pocket-watch standards. That scale supports the prominent dial, but the available product information does not give the watch’s thickness, weight, or chain length—details that would help a prospective owner judge how it carries and handles.

What the specifications mean for ownership
Hand winding
The ETA 6497 is hand-wound, so the watch must be wound rather than relying on wrist movement. Hamilton states a 50-hour power reserve. The announcement does not specify winding frequency in everyday conditions or provide an independent measurement.
