Its defining practical details are a 14.45 mm case thickness, 49 mm lug-to-lug measurement, 60-hour stated power reserve and 10-bar water-resistance rating.
What is the Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto Chrono Black PVD?
H38446730 is Hamilton’s all-black PVD-coated version of the Intra-Matic Auto Chrono. Hamilton links the collection to its racing roots in 1968 and says the design takes inspiration from the Chrono-matic, which the brand describes as its first automatic chronograph. That is Hamilton’s product-history wording, not a quotation attributed to a named individual. Hamilton’s international product page identifies this specific reference.

How the size and black finish affect the choice
The 40 mm diameter gives the watch a conventional case width, but diameter is only part of how a chronograph wears. At 14.45 mm thick, it has substantial height, and the 49 mm lug-to-lug span is useful to compare with a watch that already fits you well. If possible, try it on: wrist shape, strap tension and case proportions affect perceived size.
The black PVD-coated stainless-steel case and black dial make this a distinctly monochrome take on the vintage-inspired racing format. The finish is a core design choice rather than a different movement specification. Hamilton lists sapphire crystal with anti-reflection treatment, plus Super-LumiNova for low-light visibility.

Movement and chronograph functions
The watch uses Hamilton’s automatic H-31 caliber and includes a chronograph, date and tachymeter. Hamilton gives the movement a 60-hour power reserve. The tachymeter is the scale used for calculating speed over a known distance from elapsed time; the chronograph supplies the timing function. These listed features describe the watch’s functions, not independent accuracy or durability testing.

Hamilton lists a calf-leather strap under reference H6000002111. The watch’s lug width is 20 mm, while the listed buckle width is 18 mm. Those measurements are not interchangeable: the lug figure is the nominal strap width at the case, and the buckle figure describes the narrower buckle end.

A third-party strap marked 20 mm may be a starting point, but confirm its end shape and attachment geometry as well as buckle compatibility before ordering. Hamilton’s reference for the listed strap is useful when seeking the same replacement.

What to compare before choosing it
For a meaningful comparison with another automatic chronograph, line up like-for-like specifications rather than relying on the shared category name. Check case diameter, thickness and lug-to-lug, then compare movement type, stated power reserve, chronograph functions, water-resistance rating, case finish and strap or bracelet fit. In particular, distinguish H38446730’s black PVD finish from other Intra-Matic variants and assess the 49 mm lug-to-lug span against your wrist or a watch you already wear comfortably.
