The Hamilton PSR revives the broad, cushion-shaped look of the original Pulsar in a modern digital-quartz watch. Despite the familiar red digits and “LED watch” shorthand, its display is a hybrid LCD/OLED: the time stays visible in standard mode, then the side button illuminates it on demand. Hamilton currently lists steel reference H52414130 and gold-tone PVD reference H52424130; the latter is limited to 1,970 pieces.
Why the Hamilton PSR matters
Hamilton unveiled the Pulsar at a New York press conference on May 6, 1970, according to Swatch Group Japan’s March 18, 2020 launch release. That release says the P1 went on sale in 1972 and the P2 was presented in 1973. The PSR was introduced in 2020 as a revival marking the P1’s fiftieth anniversary, but its case design specifically follows the 1973 P2’s broad cushion form.
The original P1 was an unusually expensive early digital watch. Swatch Group Japan’s 2020 release reports that 400 were produced and that the price was $2,100. Those are historical figures reported by the company, not current prices or an independently verified production count.
The PSR is a design revival, not a mechanically identical vintage Pulsar. It uses a modern digital-quartz movement and a hybrid LCD/OLED display, retaining the space-age silhouette while changing the underlying technology.

How the PSR display works
Calling the PSR an LED watch captures its luminous red-digit look, but not the full display design. Hamilton describes a hybrid LCD/OLED screen: the LCD keeps the time visible in ordinary conditions, while OLED illuminates the red numerals when you press the side button. The digits do not remain brightly lit continuously.
- A brief button press illuminates the time.
- Pressing again while the display is lit shows seconds.
- If left alone, the display returns to standard time after four seconds; the seconds view returns after ten seconds.
- The manual specifies AM/PM time.
Hamilton’s instruction manual summarizes the function this way: “Your Hamilton PSR watch features a special push button which lights up time on demand.”

Hamilton’s current product page lists both references with the same core dimensions and technical specifications. Their main differences are the finish and whether the model is limited edition.

Choose the steel H52414130 if you want the more understated finish. The gold-tone H52424130 makes the retro styling more overt and carries a stated production limit. The shared dimensions and listed specifications mean the choice is primarily about appearance and edition status, rather than a different display or movement.

Swatch Group Japan’s 2020 release gave Japanese launch prices of ¥90,000 before tax for the steel model and ¥120,000 before tax for the gold PVD model. These are historical launch prices, not current prices. For a purchase decision, check Hamilton or an authorized retailer for the price and availability in your region; neither is established by those launch figures.
What about the black PSR?
Hamilton announced a black PSR variant in a February 16, 2022 press release. The announcement describes an all-black style that preserves the Pulsar’s space-age contours and bright red dot-matrix display. That release establishes the variant’s announcement, but not its present availability or a current regional price. Confirm the exact reference and a live local listing before treating it as an option.

Setting and maintaining the watch
The Hamilton manual says to press and hold the control for three seconds to enter time-setting mode. The button sequence then advances through the hour, minute tens, minute units, and seconds. Follow the manual for the exact sequence and feedback on the display rather than assuming it works like a conventional multi-button digital watch.
A flashing display or a “bat” message indicates a battery end-of-life warning, according to the manual. Hamilton directs owners to an approved maintenance center or point of sale for battery changes. The reviewed manual does not state a battery-life duration, so no particular interval should be assumed.
