Its rider-tab bezel and Rouleaux bracelet attract attention before the Manufacture Caliber 01, 200-meter water resistance, or 70-hour power reserve get a chance to make the technical case.
This review centers on the 2020-era Chronomat B01 42, especially reference AB0134101B1A1, and then separates it from Breitling’s 2026 MY26 Chronomat B01 Chronograph 42 refresh. The generations share a name and movement family, but their dimensions and bracelet architecture are not identical.
Why the Chronomat B01 42 gets noticed
The Breitling Chronomat B01 42 gets comments because it has almost no anonymous parts. The four raised rider tabs, cylindrical Rouleaux bracelet, substantial chronograph case, blue sunburst dial, contrasting registers, and mix of polished and brushed surfaces give it an identity that is visible from across a room. That is also why it can divide opinion.
The watch does not disappear on the wrist, and it does not try to. Its strongest argument is character: a recognizable luxury sports chronograph powered by Breitling’s Manufacture Caliber 01, with 200-meter water resistance and roughly 70 hours of power reserve. Its weakness is the same thing. Anyone seeking a quiet, low-profile chronograph may find the design busy or overconfident.

Important distinction: this article is centered on the legacy/current-generation 2020-era Chronomat B01 42, represented by references such as AB0134101B1A1. Breitling also lists a substantially revised 2026 MY26 Chronomat B01 Chronograph 42, including reference AB0158101C1A1 and related steel, two-tone, and platinum configurations. The two generations share the B01 movement family and broad design language, but they do not have identical cases, bracelet architecture, bezel construction, or wearing proportions.
For the earlier steel reference, see Breitling’s official Chronomat B01 42 product page. The 2026 model is covered separately below.

The older steel model is listed by Breitling at $9,550 before sales tax in the United States. That is a configuration-specific official price, not a universal Chronomat price. For comparison, Breitling’s MY26 pages list a steel-and-platinum reference, PB0158101C1A1, at $13,200 before tax, and a steel-and-18k-red-gold reference, UB0158101B1S1, at $11,900. Prices and availability can change, and the material, bracelet, and strap configuration matter.
A design built from signatures
The rider-tab bezel
The Chronomat’s bezel is the quickest explanation for the watch’s polarizing personality. Its raised rider tabs at the cardinal points are not decorative afterthoughts; they are the collection’s visual punctuation. Combined with the ratcheted, unidirectional bezel, they make the case immediately identifiable.
On a conventional chronograph, the bezel may recede behind the dial and pushers. On the Chronomat, it competes for attention. That can make the watch feel purposeful and sporty, but it can also create visual overload when combined with a busy three-register dial and prominent bracelet. The same component that gives the watch character is the component most likely to make a minimalist-minded buyer reject it.
Breitling traces the design back to the Chronomat introduced in 1984. The model followed the 1983 Chronograph Frecce Tricolori developed with Italy’s Frecce Tricolori aerobatic squadron, and it represented Breitling’s return to a bold mechanical chronograph during the quartz era. The company’s Chronomat history explains the rider tabs and Rouleaux bracelet as central parts of that continuing design language.
This is not simply a retro reissue. The modern Chronomat takes an aviation-linked vocabulary and translates it into a large, highly finished sports watch. Its historical connection gives the design context, but the result is contemporary in scale, surface treatment, and mechanical specification.
The Rouleaux bracelet
The bracelet is the other reason the Chronomat is recognizable before the logo is visible. Instead of conventional flat links, the Rouleaux bracelet uses rounded, almost cylindrical links that create a flowing, articulated appearance. It is more sculptural than a generic three-link bracelet and reinforces the watch’s rounded case and bezel forms.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11That distinctiveness comes with a practical buying implication: the bracelet is part of the Chronomat’s identity, not merely a replaceable way to attach the watch to the wrist. A strap change can make the watch less visually concentrated, but it also changes the character that makes the model a Chronomat. The older reference lists a 22 mm lug width and a 22/20 mm bracelet taper; those figures should not be used to assume that any generic 22 mm accessory will fit every generation or reference.
Dial, case, and visual balance
The most recognizable older configurations combine a blue sunburst dial with contrasting sub-dials and applied rose-gold-colored elements. The sunburst finish changes with the light, while the chronograph registers, date at 6 o’clock, polished surfaces, and bezel hardware give the dial and case several competing points of focus.

- ELEGANT CARBON FIBER DESIGN: Made of high-quality PU leather with a transparent acrylic window. The smooth PU leather interior reliably protects your mechanical watches from scratches. A stylish eye-catcher and the perfect presentation for your valuable watch collection.
- IMPORTANT SIZE COMPATIBILITY (PLEASE CHECK): To ensure smooth operation and prevent motor damage, this dual watch winder is designed for watches with the following maximum dimensions: Dial diameter under 47 mm, case thickness under 28 mm, and strap circumference under 175-195 mm. It can accommodate large watches, but cannot simultaneously hold two mechanical watches with a dial diameter of 58 mm with crown. Please measure your watch before purchasing.
- OPERATING PRINCIPLE: A watch winder serves exclusively to maintain the power reserve and simulates the natural movement of the wrist. It CANNOT wind a completely stopped watch from zero. Important: Please manually wind the crown of your watch approx 20-40 times before placing it in the winder. It CANNOT start or wind a completely stopped watch from zero. We also recommend manually checking the time once a week.
- INTELLIGENT INTERVAL ROTATION: Programmed with pauses to prevent over-winding. Mode B: 2 min clockwise, 6 min pause, 2 min counterclockwise. Mode L: 2 min counterclockwise, 18 min pause, 2 min clockwise. (If you see the winder rotate and then stop, this is the programmed pause — NOT a malfunction. Please wait through the full pause period (6 min for Mode B, 18 min for Mode L) )You can switch the device off when not in use.(Speed: 970-2430 TPD. Automatic watches only. NOT for Quartz, Seiko Kinetic, or Citizen Eco-Drive).
- CONSTANT POWER SUPPLY (NO BATTERY): Please note that this device does not have a built-in battery and must be permanently connected to a power source (3V~9V, 0.5A) during operation. A connection cable is included (power adapter NOT included). Multiple watch winders can be conveniently connected in series via the cable to save space and power outlets.
That is the central design trade-off. The Chronomat is coherent because all of its parts are assertive in the same direction. It is not coherent because it is restrained. A buyer who appreciates visible finishing, contrast, and a strong silhouette will see intentionality. A buyer who prefers a monochrome tool watch or a thin dress chronograph may see too many ideas occupying the same 42 mm case.
Calling it the “King of Comments” is therefore an editorial characterization, not a quantified claim about universal reader engagement. The defensible point is narrower: the watch has a concentrated visual identity that invites an immediate reaction—positive or negative—more readily than a deliberately anonymous sports chronograph.
Caliber 01: conventional function, serious specification
The Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01 is the technical center of the watch. Breitling specifies an automatic winding system, approximately 70 hours of power reserve, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, 47 jewels, and COSC certification. The official collection description also identifies a date display at 6 o’clock and the chronograph’s quarter-second, 30-minute, and 12-hour indications.
In practical terms, the movement gives the Chronomat a useful weekend reserve. If the watch is removed on Friday, it may still be running on Monday depending on how fully wound it was. If it stops, it can be reset and wound again; it does not need a watch winder simply because it is automatic.
A published review describes the Caliber 01 as a column-wheel chronograph with manual-winding capability, 70-hour power reserve, 47 jewels, and COSC certification. That review is useful context, while Breitling’s product information remains the appropriate baseline for the official specifications. No accuracy rate, amplitude measurement, or chronograph-performance result should be inferred from the COSC label alone without documented testing of the individual watch.
The chronograph is also more than a decorative complication. The central chronograph hand is graduated for quarter-second timing, with separate 30-minute and 12-hour counters. The arrangement provides a full elapsed-time instrument while retaining the date display at 6. It is a familiar architecture for a modern mechanical chronograph, but it is executed here in a watch whose design is much louder than the underlying layout.
What the older model wears like on paper
The 2020-era Chronomat B01 42 measures 42 mm across and 15.1 mm thick. A published review measured approximately 50.5 mm from lug to lug on one two-tone configuration. That combination suggests a substantial wrist presence: diameter determines how much dial and bezel the wearer sees, but thickness and lug span determine how far the watch projects and how broadly it sits.
Those numbers are not a substitute for trying the exact reference on the wrist. Wrist shape, bracelet sizing, and the caseback’s contact point all affect the result. Still, they establish an important expectation: the older B01 42 is not a slim chronograph that happens to have a sporty bezel. It is a substantial sports watch whose height is part of its presence.
The bracelet’s rounded links amplify that impression visually. They catch light differently from flat brushed links and make the watch look more integrated and jewelry-like, particularly in two-tone versions. The polished and brushed case treatment does the same. Buyers who want their chronograph to remain visually quiet should regard these as potential drawbacks, not details to be overlooked.
Conversely, the water-resistance rating gives the large case a practical purpose. The older reference is rated to 200 meters, with a screw-locked crown using two gaskets and a cambered sapphire crystal glareproofed on both sides. That does not turn it into a dedicated dive watch, nor does it eliminate the need for seal maintenance, but it is a useful level of resistance for a luxury sports chronograph.

2026 MY26 refresh: thinner, revised, not merely slimmer
The 2026 Chronomat B01 Chronograph 42 changes the comparison materially. Breitling lists the new case at 13.77 mm thick, down from 15.1 mm for the earlier steel reference. The diameter remains 42 mm, water resistance remains 200 meters, and the B01 remains the movement platform with approximately 70 hours of reserve.
The reduction in thickness is the easy headline, but it is not the whole update. Breitling’s current collection material describes a revised bezel that integrates the insert, screws, and rider tabs into a single piece, reducing the previous 18-component construction while retaining the raised rider tabs and unidirectional action. Secondary coverage of the refresh also identifies a more integrated case-to-bracelet architecture and micro-adjustment in the steel and two-tone bracelet clasps.
That means the MY26 model should not be described as the old Chronomat with a thinner caseback. The case-to-bracelet transition, bezel construction, dial execution, and fine-adjustment system all contribute to a different wearing and visual proposition. The stated dimensions and hardware changes suggest an easier fit for some wrists, but comfort remains individual and should not be declared universal without handling the watch.
The refresh is evolutionary rather than a new movement platform. Breitling is trying to make the Chronomat easier to wear and more integrated without deleting the features that make it recognizable. Whether that is an improvement depends on what the buyer values. The cleaner architecture may appeal to someone who found the older model overbuilt; another buyer may prefer the more elaborate, unmistakably mechanical-looking construction of the earlier design.
Configurations also differ. Breitling lists the steel-and-platinum PB0158101C1A1 with a steel bracelet, while the steel-and-red-gold UB0158101B1S1 is listed with a black rubber strap. Do not assume that a MY26 specification, bracelet, clasp, or strap applies to every 2026 reference.
Ownership: water resistance, service, and warranty
Warranty coverage
Breitling states that watches equipped with a Manufacture mechanical movement receive a five-year international movement warranty from the date of purchase. The brand also offers a possible additional three-year extension for mechanical Manufacture movements, subject to its terms and continuing service requirements. Buyers should confirm the conditions that apply to their region, purchase channel, and individual warranty record through the Breitling warranty information.
A warranty is not a substitute for ordinary care. Damage from misuse, unauthorized work, or neglected seals may be treated differently from a manufacturing defect. Keep the purchase documentation and warranty record, and use an authorized channel when warranty status matters.
Service intervals
Breitling recommends maintenance service every two years. The listed maintenance work includes checks of movement parameters and functions, seal replacement, water-resistance testing, and cleaning of the case and bracelet. The brand recommends a complete service every four to six years, involving disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, seal replacement, and related work. The exact interval can depend on use and condition.

A 200-meter rating is reassuring when new or properly maintained, but it does not permanently guarantee the condition of the seals. If the watch is regularly exposed to water, periodic water-resistance checks are especially relevant. The screw-locked crown should also be fully secured as intended; forcing or operating the crown carelessly can compromise the watch.
Breitling’s US service-pricing page asks owners to enter a serial number or model reference for an individualized quote. A regional Breitling service page lists approximately USD 220 for maintenance of a Breitling-caliber chronograph, but that figure should not be presented as a guaranteed United States price for every Chronomat B01 42. Region, taxes, shipping, condition, and additional interventions can change the bill.

Does it need a watch winder?
No. The Chronomat is automatic, but Breitling’s care information does not make a winder a requirement. An owner can allow the watch to stop and reset it when it is worn again. For someone with several automatic watches, an automatic watch winder can be a display or convenience accessory, but it should not be sold as protection for the movement or as a replacement for service. Confirm current availability and product suitability before buying any accessory.

How to buy the right Chronomat B01 42
1. Start with the reference number
Do not shop by the broad name alone. Compare the exact reference on the case, warranty card, invoice, or official listing. AB0134101B1A1 identifies the older steel configuration discussed here. AB0158101C1A1, PB0158101C1A1, and UB0158101B1S1 belong to the MY26 family but represent different material and strap or bracelet configurations.
This is especially important when comparing a discounted older watch with a new MY26 model. You are comparing more than dial color and price: the thickness, bracelet architecture, bezel construction, and clasp-adjustment system differ.
2. Decide whether the design is the point
If the goal is a discreet chronograph, the rider tabs and Rouleaux bracelet are likely liabilities. A simpler bezel and conventional bracelet may serve that buyer better. If the goal is an immediately recognizable luxury sports watch, those same features are the reason to choose the Chronomat.
The watch makes the most sense for someone who actively wants visual presence, polished surfaces, and a strong silhouette. It makes less sense for someone trying to buy one chronograph that can pass unnoticed in every setting.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

3. Compare material and attachment options
Steel, steel-and-18k-red-gold, and steel-and-platinum configurations can differ substantially in both price and personality. A steel bracelet gives the Chronomat its most complete signature. A rubber-strap version can reduce the formal effect and may alter how the watch balances visually, but it remains reference-specific.
Do not order a generic 22 mm strap solely because the older steel reference lists a 22 mm lug width. End links, spring bars, taper, clasp hardware, clearance, and generation compatibility all matter. The 2026 models should be checked against their own reference details.
4. Treat a pre-owned example as a complete system
For a pre-owned Chronomat, inspect more than the dial and movement designation. Verify the exact reference, material, bracelet or strap configuration, serial and documentation, service history, warranty status, and seller protections. Check whether the bracelet has the correct end links and clasp for that reference. A replacement bracelet or mismatched parts can affect both fit and value.
Do not assume that a low price means the older generation is inferior. The 2020-era model has the more substantial 15.1 mm profile and the earlier construction; some buyers will prefer that character. The MY26 model offers a thinner 13.77 mm case and revised integration, but its higher official prices and newer architecture do not make it automatically the better choice for every wrist or taste.

Who should buy it?
- Buy it if you want identity. The Chronomat’s bezel and bracelet are among its defining reasons to exist.
- Buy it if you want a capable mechanical chronograph. Caliber 01 combines automatic winding, COSC certification, a roughly 70-hour reserve, and useful elapsed-time displays.
- Consider the MY26 model if thickness and fine adjustment matter. The 13.77 mm case and revised bracelet architecture address some of the older model’s most obvious wearing concerns.
- Choose the older model if you prefer its fuller, more elaborate presence. Its 15.1 mm profile and earlier bezel and bracelet treatment are not merely defects that the refresh corrected; they are part of its character.
- Look elsewhere if restraint is your priority. The Chronomat is not an anonymous daily beater, even in plain steel.
Verdict: a watch that earns the comments
The Breitling Chronomat B01 42 is technically familiar for its price category: automatic column-wheel chronograph architecture, COSC certification, sapphire crystal, 200-meter water resistance, and a long power reserve are all serious credentials, but none alone makes it unique.
Its uniqueness comes from the way those credentials are packaged. The rider tabs, Rouleaux bracelet, applied details, large case, and polished surfaces create a watch that announces itself. The design is coherent because every major element reinforces the same idea: this is a luxury sports chronograph built to be noticed and used.
The 2026 refresh improves the proposition on paper with a thinner case, revised bezel architecture, and reported bracelet micro-adjustment. It does not erase the Chronomat’s essential personality. The watch remains a poor choice for buyers who want visual restraint and an excellent choice for buyers who want a strong silhouette, substantial water resistance, and a manufacture chronograph with a clear point of view.
That is why “King of Comments” works as a title. Not because every observer loves the Chronomat, and not because its specifications are revolutionary, but because the watch makes indifference difficult.

Is the 2026 Chronomat B01 42 the same watch as the 2020-era model?
No. The legacy Chronomat B01 42 is 15.1 mm thick, while Breitling lists the 2026 MY26 model at 13.77 mm. The refresh also changes the bezel construction, case-to-bracelet architecture, and reported bracelet micro-adjustment system, so it is more than a thinner version of the older watch.
Does the Breitling Chronomat B01 42 need a watch winder?
No. Its automatic movement can be allowed to stop and then be reset when needed. A winder is optional convenience or display equipment for owners with multiple automatic watches, not a requirement for operating the Chronomat and not a substitute for servicing.
How long is the Chronomat B01 42 warranty?
Breitling lists the Manufacture mechanical-movement warranty at five years internationally, with a possible additional three-year extension subject to its terms and continuing service requirements. Confirm the conditions for the specific watch and region through Breitling’s warranty information.
How often should a Chronomat B01 42 be serviced?
Breitling recommends maintenance service every two years and a complete service every four to six years. Its US service-pricing page provides individualized estimates by serial number or reference; regional prices should not be treated as guaranteed US pricing.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Chronomat B01 42 is a capable, well-specified mechanical sports chronograph whose rider-tab bezel and Rouleaux bracelet make it unusually recognizable—and unusually debatable. Choose the older 2020-era model for its substantial, elaborate presence; choose the 2026 MY26 refresh for its thinner case and revised fit architecture. Neither is the right answer for someone seeking a discreet chronograph.
