The Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Cronógrafo 1946 reference 3143.1S pairs a salmon dial and tobacco-brown registers with a compact 40 mm steel case and downward-curving lugs. Its vintage-inspired design is the main draw; the practical trade-offs are modest 50 m water resistance and polished hands that can be harder to pick out against the dark registers in some light. Fratello reported a 100-piece edition and a €3,900 price in July 2023. The Watch Pages now labels the reference discontinued, and current stock has not been confirmed.
What makes the Cronógrafo 1946 distinctive?
The dial gives this chronograph its character. Salmon-colored, it is arranged around two horizontally positioned tobacco-brown subdials, with a tachymeter scale around the perimeter and polished, applied silver-colored Arabic numerals. The design draws on mid-century chronograph styling without being a plain reproduction. As Fratello reviewer Jorg Weppelink put it, “What stands out immediately is that the dial design is nicely balanced.” Fratello Watches, July 20, 2023.
The case is polished stainless steel. Its curved lugs are both a visual signature and a fit detail: Weppelink said they helped the watch sit comfortably during a couple of days of wear. That is a reviewer’s impression, not a guarantee of fit for every wrist. Fratello notes an overall stylistic resemblance to Vacheron Constantin chronographs with cow-horn lugs, but says the lugs on the Cuervo y Sobrinos are different.
How big is reference 3143.1S?
The case measures 40 mm across, 12 mm thick and 51.5 mm from lug to lug. The last measurement matters alongside the diameter: the watch is not especially thick on paper, but its 51.5 mm length may be more noticeable on a narrow wrist. The downward curve of the lugs can help them follow the wrist, though trying it on is the best way to judge the fit.

Is the salmon dial easy to read?
Legibility depends on the lighting and on what you expect from a chronograph. The contrasting salmon dial and dark registers make the two subdials easy to distinguish visually, and the applied numerals provide clear hour markers. But Fratello’s reviewer found that the polished hands could disappear against the dark subdials in certain lighting. The hands and markers have no lume, so this is not a watch designed for reading the time in darkness.
The dial also carries the words “Únicos Importadores.” Weppelink considered the lettering a matter of personal taste and said it did not seem distracting on the wrist. Whether it adds charm or visual clutter is subjective.

What movement is inside the Cuervo y Sobrinos 1946 chronograph?
Reference 3143.1S uses the automatic CYS 8123 chronograph movement, based on the ETA 2094. Fratello reports a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, 33 jewels and a 42-hour power reserve. Its listed functions include hours, minutes, small seconds and a chronograph with central seconds and a 30-minute counter. The movement’s ETA base identifies its underlying architecture; by itself, it does not establish that this watch is better or worse than another chronograph.
The double-curved sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating, and a sapphire window in the steel caseback reveals the movement. The supplied strap is matte chocolate-brown Louisiana alligator leather, secured by a folding or butterfly clasp. The cited specifications do not state the strap’s lug width, so they are not enough to confirm compatibility with a replacement strap.

What does 50 m water resistance mean here?
The stated rating is 5 ATM, or 50 m. It is a water-resistance specification, not a recommendation to take this chronograph swimming to that depth. For ordinary splashes, the rating offers more margin than a dress watch with minimal water resistance, but the available product information does not set out activity-specific guidance. If water exposure matters to your plans, confirm the watch’s current condition and the manufacturer’s guidance with the seller before relying on it.
Is the Historiador Cronógrafo 1946 discontinued?
The Watch Pages labels reference 3143.1S discontinued. That does not establish whether an individual retailer or a pre-owned seller has one available. Cuervo y Sobrinos directs customers to its boutiques and authorized retailers for advice, but its site does not confirm stock of this reference. Ask a seller to confirm the exact reference, condition and what is included before making a purchase.
