The Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer is a hand-wound, white-gold dress watch built around precise time setting, a marine-chronometer-inspired dial and an instantly changing Panorama Date. This article focuses on reference 1-58-08-01-04-61, the silver-blue Calibre 58-08 version reviewed by Michael Stockton at Fratello in September 2024—not the distinct blue-dial Calibre 58-01 model.
What makes the Senator Chronometer different?
The Senator Chronometer adapts design ideas from marine chronometers to a wristwatch. Its layout brings together central hours and minutes, small seconds, a running-time display, a day/night indication and the Panorama Date. The exact functions and construction vary by reference, so these details should not be treated as specifications shared by every Senator Chronometer.
For the 1-58-08-01-04-61, Glashütte Original identifies a white-gold case, manual Calibre 58-08 and chronometer certification on its official product page. The marine-chronometer inspiration is also outlined by the Fondation Haute Horlogerie.

Silver-blue dial and case details
Fratello’s Michael Stockton described the 58-08’s gray, finely grained matte dial as having a silver-blue appearance. His September 28, 2024 account says the texture is produced through a friction process involving water, salt and silver powder, followed by galvanizing. Blued applied Roman numerals and hands provide contrast, while a cross-knurled bezel and curved lugs give the case more visual detail than a plain dress-watch profile. A corrector on the case side adjusts the date.

Dimensions and wrist presence
Fratello lists this reference at 42 mm across, 48.4 mm lug-to-lug and 11.4 mm thick, with a sapphire crystal and 5-bar water resistance. Stockton found the relatively slim profile and moderate lug-to-lug length comfortable on the standard blue Louisiana alligator strap. That is one reviewer’s impression, not a guarantee of fit: wrist shape, strap adjustment and personal preference all matter.
The alligator strap and white-gold folding clasp suit the watch’s formal character. At 5 bar, it is not presented as a dive or sports watch; treat water resistance as a specification, not a reason to expose a precious-metal dress watch to avoidable water or impact.

What do Calibre 58-08 and its certification mean?
Fratello reports that the hand-wound Calibre 58-08 has 58 jewels, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), offers roughly 45 hours of reserve and is adjusted in five positions. The same review says the 58-08 undergoes 15 days of testing and adjustment. Those testing details are Fratello’s report; the manufacturer’s product page identifies the watch as chronometer-certified.
Glashütte Original explains that its German chronometer standard requires the watch to be settable precisely to the second and the movement to complete its test cycle while mounted in the case. Certification speaks to the prescribed test and setting capability; it should not be read as a promise of identical timekeeping in every wearer’s conditions.

How does the 58-01 stop-seconds and minute detent work?
The setting mechanism often associated with the Senator Chronometer’s Calibre 58-01 is distinct from the 58-08 review model. On the 58-01, pulling the crown halts the seconds; the minute detent helps the wearer position the minute hand on an intended marker; restarting begins with the seconds hand at zero. The detent is a setting aid, not evidence that the watch will achieve better measured daily accuracy.
Swatch Group’s 2009 archive describes precise coordination of the minute and seconds hands as a design goal for the hand-wound 58-01. Do not assume the 58-01’s exact setting mechanism or specification applies to Calibre 58-08 without confirmation for the particular reference.

How does the 58-08 compare with the blue-dial 58-01?
These are two different watches in the family, not interchangeable descriptions of one model. Glashütte Original’s blue-dial 1-58-01-05-34-30 uses Calibre 58-01; the silver-blue 1-58-08-01-04-61 uses Calibre 58-08.

Is the Senator Chronometer worth its price?
That depends on what you value and which reference and market you are considering. Fratello listed €36,100 for 1-58-08-01-04-61 in its September 2024 review; that is a dated report, not a verified current retail price. Glashütte Original’s product page does not state a price. Before deciding, check the current price, taxes, stock and authorized-retailer status in your region.
