The stainless-steel IWC Portofino Perpetual Calendar IW344601 brings a full calendar complication to a restrained 40 mm dress-watch design. Its silver-plated dial displays the date, day, month, leap year and moon phase, while automatic calibre 82650 supplies a stated 60-hour power reserve. The model was introduced in 2022; launch-era prices are not current price or availability guidance.

What makes the Portofino Perpetual Calendar distinctive?

The IW344601 balances a visually busy complication with a relatively spare dial. Its polished stainless-steel case measures 40 mm across and 12.7 mm thick. A thin bezel and arched sapphire crystal leave the dial prominent, while a sapphire exhibition back reveals the movement. Monochrome Watches’ 2023 hands-on review describes it as compact on the wrist, though not the smallest or thinnest perpetual calendar overall; its photographs included a 16.5 cm wrist.

The silver-plated dial uses a large Roman numeral XII, applied indices and leaf-shaped central hands. Three subsidiary registers carry the calendar information, with blue leaf-shaped hands indicating the subsidiary readings. There is a red Sunday marker and a red 60-minute marker, but no luminous material. Time+Tide’s 2022 report also describes a mirror-polished case and box-domed sapphire crystal.

How the calendar and dial are arranged

  • 3 o’clock: Pointer date.
  • 6 o’clock: Month and moon phase.
  • 9 o’clock: Day of the week and leap-year indication.

Monochrome attributes the calendar module to former IWC head watchmaker Kurt Klaus and says it was designed to let the indications be adjusted via the crown. The publication traces the module’s debut to the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar in 1985. According to that 2023 account, the calendar handles varying month lengths and leap years, but requires correction in century years that are not leap years—2100, 2200 and 2300. The same review reports that the moon-phase display deviates by one day after 577.5 years; that is a quoted precision figure from the review, not a claim independently verified here against current IWC documentation.

Calibre 82650: winding, reserve and finishing

The automatic calibre 82650 is visible through the sapphire caseback. Both hands-on reports give it a 60-hour power reserve. Monochrome specifies a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a Pellaton winding system with zirconium-oxide ceramic components in the winding mechanism. It notes circular graining and Geneva stripes; Time+Tide describes a semi-openworked rotor and decorative finishing.

IW344601 steel versus IW344602 gold

The companion reference IW344602 is made in 18K 5N gold. The cited coverage gives both versions the same 40 mm diameter and 12.7 mm thickness; their principal visible difference is the case material. The following prices are historical reports, not current quotes.

Reference Case material Case dimensions Historical reported price
IW344601 Stainless steel 40 mm diameter × 12.7 mm thick (Monochrome, April 2023; Time+Tide, November 2022) EUR 26,100, reported by Monochrome in April 2023; AU$33,900, reported by Time+Tide in November 2022
IW344602 18K 5N gold 40 mm diameter × 12.7 mm thick (Time+Tide, November 2022) AU$48,100, reported by Time+Tide in November 2022

Those figures reflect different currencies, publication dates and markets; they should not be treated as directly comparable current prices. Neither current retail pricing nor stock is established by the cited hands-on coverage.

Water resistance and practical expectations

Monochrome lists water resistance at 50 m. Time+Tide’s specification table also says 50 m, although its prose describes the case as 60 metres. Given that inconsistency and the age of both reports, treat 50 m as the reported figure rather than a substitute for checking current official guidance before exposing the watch to water. The dress-oriented design, polished surfaces and lack of luminous elements are also worth considering if you want a watch for low-light or rough-use settings.
