What is the F.P. Journe Automatique Lune?
The Automatique Lune is an automatic wristwatch built around central hours and minutes, with the date, moonphase, small seconds and power-reserve indication arranged asymmetrically across the dial. The model reviewed in 2021 paired a gold dial base with a galvanized silver surface, Clous de Paris guilloché, blue numerals and teardrop-shaped hands. The result gives the central time display visual priority without making the secondary indications disappear into a conventional subdial layout.
The 2021 review by Brandon Baines for Fratello Watches describes the refreshed version and its period pricing. For current specifications, F.P. Journe’s Automatique Lune Ref. AL2 page lists the watch and calibre 1300.3. Those sources represent different points in time, so some figures differ.
What changed in the 2021 version?
- The date aperture was enlarged, and the crown grew in size.
- The moonphase display was redesigned around a sapphire disc.
- A 42 mm case option joined the existing 40 mm size.
The review reports a case thickness of 10.6 mm. The current official product page gives an overall height of 10.7 mm. These are source-specific specifications, not a single reconciled measurement.

How are the date, moonphase and reserve arranged?
Enlarged date
The date sits at 11 o’clock. The 2021 review describes two numeral discs positioned on the same plane, framed by the enlarged aperture. The review says the date can be quick-set using the crown; F.P. Journe’s current page says adjustments are made via the crown. Neither source provides a complete setting procedure.
Moonphase and small seconds
The moonphase display uses a sapphire disc, while the small-seconds display sits at 4:30. These indications occupy separate parts of the dial rather than forming a symmetrical ring around the center. F.P. Journe’s page identifies the Lune as a watch that received the Geneva Grand Prix d’Horlogerie Best Men’s Watch prize in 2003; that is a historical award, not a 2021 review distinction.
Power-reserve scale
A retrograde reserve indicator tracks the 120-hour precision-timekeeping period. That scale should not be confused with the movement’s full running duration: F.P. Journe currently states an effective reserve of 160 ± 10 hours.

How long does the Automatique Lune run?
F.P. Journe distinguishes between 120 hours intended for precision timekeeping and 160 ± 10 hours of effective autonomy. In other words, the watch may continue running beyond the 120-hour scale’s precision window. The official page does not present the longer figure as a guarantee that rate accuracy remains unchanged throughout the full reserve.
