If you want accurate time with little attention, a cheap quartz watch does that job better. A budget mechanical watch can still be a sensible purchase for someone who values the movement, the craftsmanship, or the daily ritual of winding it, as long as the buyer understands what ownership will ask of them.
The short answer
The skeptical claim holds for one purpose: keeping accurate time without effort. Mechanical movements drift more, depend on how they are worn and stored, and need servicing on a fixed schedule. Those costs do not shrink because the watch was inexpensive. The case weakens when the buyer wants a watch to be right, and it weakens further when the buyer has no interest in winding, servicing, or the mechanism itself.
The claim does not hold for every buyer. A mechanical watch is a poor timekeeper and a reasonable object of appreciation, and those are different judgments. The sections below separate them.
Why mechanical timekeeping is harder to keep accurate
A quartz watch regulates time with a quartz crystal vibrating at a fixed frequency. A mechanical watch regulates time with a balance wheel and hairspring, and that system responds to its surroundings. Five factors matter most:

- Winding state: rate changes as the mainspring unwinds, so a watch that is nearly empty or freshly wound may run differently from the same watch later in the day.
- Position: gravity acts on the balance differently when the watch lies flat, dial up, or sits upright on the wrist, so rate can vary with how the watch is set down overnight.
- Temperature: heat and cold change the elasticity of the hairspring and the lubricants in the movement.
- Shock: knocks can move the regulation and in some cases damage parts, which then needs professional attention.
- Magnetism: magnetic fields can affect the hairspring and disturb timekeeping until the watch is demagnetized.
Japan Clock & Watch Association’s general guidance makes the same point: mechanical accuracy is affected by position, winding, temperature, shock, and magnetism, and in typical use it is measured in seconds per day rather than seconds per month. Seiko’s own accuracy guidance on mechanical watches describes the same real-world influences.
What the published accuracy figures actually say
Brands quote accuracy in different units and under different conditions, so the numbers cannot be lined up as if they measured the same thing. The table shows what each source states and how it frames the figure.

| Source (undated page) | Quartz figure | Mechanical figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baume & Mercier FAQ | About 1–2 seconds per week | About 1–2 minutes per week | The brand’s general comparison, not a guarantee for any model. The FAQ’s own time units are inconsistent in places, so treat the pair as a rough contrast. |
| Japan Clock & Watch Association | About ±20 seconds per month for a general quartz watch | At least several seconds per day | General industry guidance. Mechanical accuracy depends on position, winding, temperature, shock, and magnetism. |
| Victorinox FAQ | Not stated | −2/+20 seconds per day for its mechanical movement | Brand-specific figure for one maker’s movement. It should not be treated as a benchmark for budget watches in general. |
Read together, the figures support a narrow conclusion. Quartz holds time far more tightly, and a mechanical watch’s rate is a range that the wearer should expect to check and adjust. A catalogue specification describes a measurement under stated conditions, not the result on every wrist.
Service intervals are not interchangeable
Mechanical watches need periodic servicing because lubricants age and wear accumulates. The makers do not agree on the interval, so a buyer should check the specific brand and movement rather than assume a universal rule.

- Round watch featuring corrugated unidirectional bezel, luminous hands/markers, and magnified date window at three o'clock
- Folding clasp with safety, easy to handle and not easy to fall off accidentally.
- Japanese automatic movement with analog display; Crystal Type: Mineral
- Fashionable, very charming for all occasions. Amazing looking watch, a great gift for family and friends.
| Maker | Recommended interval | Notes from the maker’s guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Baume & Mercier | Complete service every 3–5 years; 5–7 years for watches with the Baumatic movement | Recommends a water-resistance check every year |
| Victorinox | Complete mechanical overhaul every 4–6 years | Overhaul interval stated for its mechanical watches |
| Seiko | Examination, cleaning, and oiling at a Seiko service center every 3 years | Service at its own service center |
Two details matter for a budget purchase. First, a service plan is a commitment that lasts the life of the watch, so the interval determines how often the cost recurs. Second, the maker’s service network determines where that work can be done. Before buying, check whether the brand offers authorized service for the model in your market, and whether an independent watchmaker you trust can work on it.
Ownership effort: winding, reserve, and wear
Automatic mechanical watches are wound by the motion of the wrist, and that is where many owners discover the practical cost. Victorinox states that its automatic models need 8–10 hours of daily wear to fully wind and have a power reserve of 38–48 hours depending on model. Those figures are that brand’s guidance for specific models, not a standard for all automatics. A watch that is not worn every day will stop unless it is wound by hand or placed on a winder, and a stopped watch must be reset and checked before it can be trusted again.

Quartz removes most of this. A battery must be replaced periodically, and the watch must still be set after a battery change, but there is no daily winding routine and no position effect on rate.

The case against budget mechanical watches often rests on servicing costs, and this is the claim that cannot be made with confidence from the published material. Manufacturers give intervals, not prices, and there is no reliable independent data on what a service costs for an inexpensive movement or what share of owners service or replace such watches. A buyer who wants a break-even point should obtain written quotes for the named model in their own market, including shipping and any parts that may be needed. Until then, the economics of a cheap mechanical watch should be treated as unknown rather than as clearly worse than quartz.

The purchase is most defensible when the buyer wants something other than precise time from the watch. Two kinds of buyer fit this profile:
- The mechanism enthusiast who wants to see a balance wheel move, understand how a movement is built, and learn to regulate and maintain a watch.
- The design or ritual buyer who values dial and case design, the feel of a mechanical watch, and the habit of winding it each morning. NOMOS identifies this appreciation of craftsmanship as a reason many people choose traditional timekeeping.
Those buyers accept a rate that drifts, a service schedule, and a daily routine as part of the object’s character. For them, the watch earns its place by what it offers, not by what it measures.
Quick Recap
A checklist before you buy a budget mechanical watch
- Decide whether your priority is accurate timekeeping or the mechanical experience. If it is accuracy, a quartz watch is the better tool.
- Check the movement’s published accuracy range and the conditions under which it was measured.
- Find the maker’s service interval for that movement, and confirm where authorized service is available in your country.
- Get a written service quote for the named model before purchase, if cost matters to you.
- Confirm the warranty, water-resistance specification, and materials for the specific model, since the general argument cannot judge any single watch’s build quality.
- Be honest about whether you will wear or wind the watch regularly. A mechanical watch left in a drawer is a stopped watch.
