The Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 Carbotech PAM00616 is a 47 mm automatic dive watch with a distinctive black, layered-carbon look, a P.9000 movement and a published 300 m water-resistance rating. Its scale is part of the appeal—and the main fit question. In Robert-Jan Broer’s 2015 hands-on review, it wore more comfortably than he expected, but he still could not picture wearing it every day.
What the PAM00616 is
Panerai named this reference the Luminor Submersible 1950 Carbotech 3 Days Automatic; it is also commonly written PAM 616 or PAM00616. Fratello reviewed it in 2015, and Monochrome Watches published a later review in 2018. The Panerai Reference Database, a non-official secondary source that says it is not approved by Panerai, lists production from 2015 through 2018 and PAM01616 as its successor: Panerai Reference Database.
That production history makes PAM00616 a discontinued reference rather than the same watch as Panerai’s later Carbotech Submersible. The current US listing is for PAM02616, which uses a different movement. Its specifications should not be used as a proxy for this review’s PAM00616.

Carbotech gives the watch its identity
The case’s appeal is not simply that it is black. In his 2015 review, Broer describes the Carbotech as a layered carbon-fiber material bound with PEEK polymer under pressure and heat. He notes that the visible layers create a pattern that varies across the case, giving it a matte, technical appearance unlike a uniform coating. He also characterizes it as light and corrosion-resistant; those are his material descriptions, not independently measured comparisons in the available model specifications.

Monochrome identifies Carbotech on the case, bezel and crown bridge, while the 2015 review notes a titanium caseback. Together with the broad case and crown-protecting bridge, the material makes this a deliberately conspicuous, tool-like Panerai rather than a restrained dress diver.
Dial, movement and diving features
The black dial uses luminous markers and hands, with a date window at 3 o’clock and small seconds at 9. Broer points out the warm, faux-patina coloring of the markers and hands, plus blue accents. Monochrome reports that the lume glows green in darkness. These details soften the otherwise technical black-and-carbon presentation without making the dial complicated.

The automatic P.9000 has two barrels and a 72-hour power reserve, according to both the 2015 and 2018 reviews. Broer also notes that the hour hand can be advanced separately from the minute hand, a practical feature when adjusting local time. The 300 m water-resistance figure and unidirectional bezel are reported by Monochrome’s 2018 review. A rating is a specification, not a substitute for checking the condition and service history of an individual pre-owned watch.
How it wears: a personal review, not a fit guarantee
At 47 mm across and 16.8 mm thick according to Monochrome, the PAM00616 is a substantial watch. Broer’s 2015 experience is a useful counterpoint to the measurements: he found it more comfortable than its size suggested, writing, “These 47mm Panerai watches are surprisingly wearable, as I also wrote in the PAM 615 review.” He also describes the rubber strap as comfortable and well made.

Comfort did not make it an everyday choice for him. Broer wrote, “I couldn’t see myself wearing it on a daily basis due to its size, but then again, I rarely bump into people these days with just one watch anyway.” That is one reviewer’s impression, not a promise that the watch will suit a particular wrist. If you are considering one, try it on if possible and assess how the case sits, how its thickness feels under a cuff, and whether its visual scale suits your usual wear.
PAM00616 versus the later PAM02616
Panerai’s current US product listing for PAM02616 provides useful context for the later Carbotech Submersible family, but it describes a different reference. The distinctions matter if you are comparing specifications or shopping for a strap.

Panerai’s PAM02616 US product listing also reports a weight of 111.0 g for that later reference. That figure does not establish the weight of PAM00616.

The published prices are historical retail figures, not current resale estimates. Fratello reported €17,500 including VAT in November 2015. Monochrome reported €16,600 or US$17,100 in September 2018. The amounts differ by date and source; neither establishes what a PAM00616 costs today.

For a pre-owned example, the more useful comparison is between watches of similar condition and completeness, not a historical retail number and a present asking price. Check the specific watch’s condition, service history, included accessories and provenance, and use a seller with safeguards appropriate to a discontinued luxury watch. No current inventory, verified transaction data or resale valuation is established here.
Strap compatibility also deserves reference-level checking. Panerai lists a 26/22 mm strap for PAM02616, but that does not confirm fit on PAM00616 or compatibility of every aftermarket strap. Before buying one, verify the exact watch reference, lug width, buckle and seller’s stated compatibility.
