The Makina Andras_II Gray pairs a conventional mechanical-watch layout with a layered dial and a case that looks more contemporary than a traditional dress watch. In Jorg Weppelink’s Fratello hands-on review, the case and wearing comfort won him over; the busy dial remained an acquired taste. Whether it reads as a dress watch or a modern rectangular watch depends largely on which of those design cues matters more to you.
What makes the Andras_II Gray surprising?
Its proportions and basic display are restrained: a 33 mm-wide stainless-steel case, hours and minutes, and a small-seconds register. But the case is not a plain rectangle. Weppelink describes a rectangular bezel whose rounded case flanks create an elongated-octagonal impression, with brushed and polished surfaces adding contrast. The result keeps the outline compact while giving it a more sculptural presence than a simple dress-watch case.
The gray dial pushes the design further from convention. It is made of layered brass with a fine sand-textured finish, recessed circular and oval sections, applied hour markers, and bright blue accents on the hands. Those shapes create depth, but also make the dial the model’s most divisive feature.
Is it a dress watch or a modern rectangular watch?
There is no objective category boundary here. The small-seconds display, compact dimensions, and relatively slim 11.5 mm profile support a dress-watch reading. The unusual case geometry, textured multi-level dial, gray silicone strap, and blue hand accents make it feel more contemporary and less formal than a conventional rectangular dress watch.

Weppelink found that the case, proportions, curved caseback, finishing, and silicone strap combined for a comfortable wearing experience. He described the dial as an acquired taste and said he would prefer a simpler one. Those are his impressions from wearing the watch, rather than guarantees about fit or taste for every wearer. Prices differ by source and date. Fratello’s review, published January 10, 2026, reports a price of US$800. Makina’s official product page currently displays $890. Treat the first as the review’s dated price report and the second as the manufacturer’s displayed price when checked; confirm the live price and availability before ordering.
Makina says US and Philippine customers pay no import fees, while customers elsewhere are responsible for import duties and taxes in their country. Who is this watch for?
The Andras_II Gray makes the most sense for someone who wants a compact mechanical watch but does not want a conventional, minimal dress-watch dial. Its core specifications are straightforward; its visual identity is not. If you prefer calm, instantly legible dials, the recessed shapes and blue accents may be a drawback. If case geometry and layered design matter more, those same details are the point.
Before comparing it with another watch, weigh the dimensions and case shape against your wrist, consider whether the dial works for your taste and reading habits, and compare movement, water resistance, strap, warranty, price, and regional landed cost.
