The Praesidus A-5 UDT is a modern, 38mm canteen-style dive watch whose defining feature is a tethered cap that covers its crown. It pairs historical military styling with a double-domed sapphire crystal, an embossed luminous dial and a stated 20 ATM water-resistance rating. The crown-cap design gives it unusual character, but reviewers found the smaller crown beneath it awkward to operate—and the movement depends on which version or product page you consult.
What the Praesidus A-5 UDT is
Praesidus presents the A-5 UDT as a modern revival inspired by U.S. Navy BUSHIPS canteen-style dive watches and the WWII Underwater Demolition Teams. The brand’s framing makes the cap-covered crown the central design cue: a large screw-on cap protects the smaller crown underneath. This is a contemporary homage, not a WWII-issued watch; its modern materials and stated water-resistance rating should be considered separately from the historical inspiration.
Fratello’s 2023 account adds context, describing the UDTs’ reconnaissance and obstacle-clearing role and reporting that BUSHIPS pursued mass production with Elgin, Hamilton and Bulova. That historical account is attributed to Fratello, rather than treated here as independently verified archival documentation. Fratello’s A-5 UDT review also explains the canteen cap as a way to protect the crown.
Specifications and the movement discrepancy
Praesidus’s project page and specification page do not name the same movement. The project material specifies a Swiss Soprod P024, while the brand’s separate 38mm specification page and its current Abyss Blue listing name a Miyota 9015. Fratello’s 2023 review sample had a Soprod P024. The available pages do not establish when or why the movement changed, or whether every current variant uses the same one. Check the movement listed for the exact variant and production period before buying.

The reserve figures are not interchangeable: Praesidus gives 41 hours for the P024 on its project page, while Fratello reports 38 hours for its review sample. Treat each as source-specific, not as a settled universal specification. The Miyota 9015 is named on the Praesidus specification page and the current Abyss Blue product page.
Case, dial and strap choices
A compact case with a prominent crown cap
The manufacturer lists a 38mm case, and Fratello measured its sample at 12.5mm thick and 45.8mm long. Those dimensions give a useful starting point, but they cannot predict how the watch will feel on every wrist. WatchReport’s reviewer found the 38mm watch small; individual impressions of fit vary, so the case length and thickness are worth considering alongside diameter.

The double-domed sapphire crystal is part of the watch’s visual character as well as its construction. Fratello noted distortion near the crystal’s edge, an effect that can alter the view of the dial at an angle. The dial’s embossed branding and indexes add relief to an otherwise tool-watch-inspired presentation.
Black, Blue Sunray and Abyss Blue
Praesidus’s black dial is closest to the utilitarian look described in its project material. Blue Sunray uses a brighter sunray treatment, while Abyss Blue has a shaded blue presentation. The Time Bum reviewer preferred Abyss Blue aesthetically; that is a personal preference, not a difference in function established by the available product information. Straps and fit
The listed 20mm lug width gives buyers a clear starting point when looking for a replacement, including a 20mm Tropic rubber watch strap. Praesidus product material shows Tropic rubber, canvas, NATO and beads-of-rice choices across listings, but availability depends on the specific variant. Before ordering another strap, verify its lug attachment and spring-bar requirements, length and buckle compatibility.
Strap impressions are subjective: reviewers differed in their comments about feel, and WatchReport noted that the crown chain could bunch up. Consider how the tether sits against the strap and wrist, rather than judging comfort from the case measurement alone.

How the crown cap works—and what reviewers found
The cap unscrews to expose the smaller crown. Fratello’s Jorg Weppelink found the cap easy to operate but the recessed crown difficult to pull out, concluding, “Ultimately, it works but is not the most comfortable crown to operate.” The cap’s two-link chain can fold in or out, according to the review. WatchReport’s reviewer described the chain as stiff and liable to bunch up. These are reviewer observations, not a guarantee that every wearer will have the same experience.
The trade-off is distinctive operation in exchange for an extra step whenever the crown is needed. If you regularly adjust a watch, the recessed crown is worth considering; if you mainly want the canteen-watch look, the cap may be part of the appeal. The reviewer impressions do not establish how the cap or chain will feel to every owner.

Water resistance and practical use
Praesidus lists 20 ATM (660 ft) on its project page and 20 ATM on its specification page. Fratello’s 2023 sample was described as water resistant to 200m. These are source-stated ratings, not a substitute for following the manufacturer’s instructions on crown operation, maintenance or use in water. The supplied material does not establish independent testing of the rating.
The crown cap is a design feature and should not be treated as evidence that the watch is suitable for a particular dive or water activity. Consult the instructions for the exact watch and ensure the crown and cap are secured as directed before exposure to water.
Price and availability depend on the variant
Praesidus product listings observed in 2026 showed the Black at $450 and blue variants at $645; the Black and Blue Sunray pages were marked sold out in the captured listings. Prices and stock can change, so confirm both on the Black listing or the relevant blue-variant page before making a decision. The current Abyss Blue page names the Miyota 9015, which is another reason to check the exact listing rather than assume all A-5 UDTs share a movement.
Who should consider the A-5 UDT?
- A good fit if: you want a compact modern watch with bold canteen-style history, raised dial detailing and a prominent crown cap.
- Think carefully if: frequent crown adjustment, a simple strap-and-case profile or an easily operated recessed crown matters more than the distinctive design.
- Before buying: confirm the exact variant, movement, price and stock; check case dimensions against your preferences; and verify strap attachment and fit if you plan to change it.
For buyers, the central question is whether the cap-covered crown’s character is worth its reported operating awkwardness. The movement question is separate: published Praesidus materials identify both the Soprod P024 and Miyota 9015, so verify the one fitted to the specific watch on offer.
