The Praesidus DD-45 Patina reviewed by Fratello is a 38 mm automatic watch with an intentionally aged dial inspired by the British Dirty Dozen field watches. Reviewer Jorg Weppelink found it balanced and comfortable on his wrist, and liked the dial’s vintage character. The aging is artificial—not patina accumulated through decades of wear—and the automatic Patina is distinct from newer quartz DD-45 variants.
What the hands-on review found
In a March 6, 2024 review for Fratello, Jorg Weppelink described the DD-45 Patina as compact and well-proportioned on his wrist. He found that the dial’s numerals and other elements had room to breathe, and reported that the watch felt balanced and comfortable while it was in the office. Weppelink liked the style and execution, particularly the aged look. The important distinction is that the Patina’s aging is a deliberate treatment: it is designed to look weathered rather than showing naturally accumulated wear.

Fratello’s dimensions help explain why the reviewer found the watch compact: the case is 38 mm across and 45 mm from lug to lug. Those numbers cannot predict how it will wear on another person; wrist shape and strap choice matter too.
Why the DD-45 has a vintage military look
Praesidus presents the DD-45 as an homage to the Dirty Dozen, a group of watches made by twelve manufacturers in response to a British War Office field-watch request. In the brand’s account, the brief called for a legible black dial, white Arabic numerals, a railroad-style minute track and small seconds at six. Praesidus’ heritage and specification page is the source for that history and the brand’s interpretation of the design.

The automatic DD-45’s design details include a textured dial, raised luminous indices and luminous obelisk-shaped hands. Praesidus lists a screw-down crown, double-domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal and 10 ATM (100 m/330 ft) water resistance for its automatic DD-45. These are manufacturer specifications; they do not establish that every DD-45 variant has the same construction.

Praesidus has used the DD-45 name for different configurations. In particular, the automatic Patina reviewed by Fratello should not be confused with the quartz Midnight. Check the exact variant before relying on a movement or dimension.

The brand also lists brown leather, a Bonklip bracelet and green Perlon among the automatic DD-45 strap choices; the Factory Fresh page lists sand distressed leather as an option. Treat these as listed configurations rather than a guarantee of current stock. The Patina’s 20 mm lug width gives a concrete starting point when looking for a replacement strap, but confirm width and fit for the exact watch before ordering.

Who may prefer the Patina
- Choose the Patina’s look if you want a deliberately aged dial rather than a clean, new-looking interpretation. Its weathering is aesthetic, not evidence of the watch’s age.
- Consider the automatic model if you want the Landeron L24 and are comfortable with a mechanical watch that can be wound by hand. The Midnight page specifies a quartz movement instead.
- Use the dimensions as a screening tool, not a promise. The Patina’s 38 mm case and 45 mm lug-to-lug length are useful comparisons with watches you already wear, while Weppelink’s comfortable fit applies to his wrist.
- Verify the listing before buying. Product pages can describe different movements and dimensions under the DD-45 name, and the cited product pages showed sold out when accessed.
