The U-Boat Darkmoon 44 MM Grey SS, reference 9149, puts its dial behind an oil-filled case and leaves a small air bubble visible by design. The bubble accommodates oil expansion and contraction as temperatures change; it is not a defect. The watch is a quartz hours-and-minutes model with a listed 50 m / 5 ATM water-resistance rating, but it is not a dive watch.
What the Darkmoon 44 Grey is
U-Boat’s official catalog calls reference 9149 “DARKMOON 44 GREY.” It specifies a 44 mm AISI 316L stainless-steel case filled with special oil, a grey-black dial, domed sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, Swiss quartz movement, hours and minutes display, and a black vulcanized rubber strap. Fratello’s hands-on review identifies the movement more specifically as a Ronda 712.3 quartz caliber. It also describes white Super-LumiNova on the grey-to-black dial, a solid steel caseback with a Locking Ring System, and a black rubber strap with a steel pin buckle. There is a small but useful measurement distinction: U-Boat’s catalog names the model as 44 mm, while Fratello gives a case diameter of 44.8 mm. The exact value depends on which source’s specification you are quoting.

Why there is a bubble inside the watch
The visible bubble is intentional. U-Boat says it compensates for temperature variations; Fratello explains that oil expands and contracts as temperature changes, and that the compressible air bubble provides room for this volume change. In this watch, the oil fill is intended to emphasize the dial and contribute to the Darkmoon’s appearance and readability. It does not turn the watch into a higher-pressure instrument. Is the Darkmoon a dive watch?
No. Its listed water resistance is 50 m / 5 ATM, but Fratello explicitly cautions that the Darkmoon is not a diver’s watch. Crown position and battery service

How the 44.8 mm case wears
Fratello reviewer Gerard Nijenbrinks wrote that the 44.8 mm Darkmoon suited his 18 cm (7-inch) wrist and felt comfortable. He found the rubber strap soft enough for comfortable wear. Nijenbrinks said he would personally choose the 40 mm version for a less showy look. That is a subjective preference: the 44 mm model’s appeal is partly its more conspicuous wrist presence, while the smaller variant offers a less prominent alternative.
