Hands-On: Why the Grand Seiko SBGW264’s Green Dial Stands Out

The limited-edition Grand Seiko SBGW264 pairs a machine-engraved green dial inspired by Shizukuishi’s white birch forest with an 18k rose-gold case and hand-wound Caliber 9S64.

The Grand Seiko SBGW264’s green dial is striking because it does more than present a flat field of color: its engraved pattern is designed to shift between green and white as light and viewing angle change. Grand Seiko says the design draws inspiration from white birch trees near its Shizukuishi studio. Calling it “one of the best” green dials is an aesthetic judgment, not an established industry ranking—but the SBGW264 has a specific, evocative design story behind its appeal.

What makes the SBGW264 dial stand out?

The dial’s texture is the centerpiece. Grand Seiko describes it as machine engraved, with a pattern inspired by the white birch forest near the studio where the watch is made. In its March 2020 release, the brand said the pattern should shimmer in green and white as the viewing angle changes, recalling sunlight on leaves, pale tree bark and the forest floor. Grand Seiko’s release supplies the design intent; it does not establish a comparative ranking against other green watches.

That distinction matters when assessing the title’s “one of the best” claim. The dial’s appeal is subjective, and no independent comparative ranking or audience survey establishes that the SBGW264 is objectively among the industry’s best. A more useful case for its distinction is the combination of a textured green surface, a nature-derived concept and the way the pattern is meant to respond to changing light.

What is the SBGW264, and how was it made?

The SBGW264 is a Grand Seiko 60th Anniversary Limited Edition in the Elegance Collection. Grand Seiko announced an edition of 120 pieces in 2020. Its dial is machine engraved; the brand’s nearby SBGW263 offered a different execution, pairing a platinum case with a hand-engraved dial, while the SBGW264 uses rose gold and a machine-engraved green dial. The original release announcement describes the collection and dial inspiration.

The company’s stated inspiration is not a claim that the dial reproduces a literal photograph or a particular tree. Rather, the engraving gives the surface a repeating texture intended to evoke the shifting light of a birch forest.

These are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent timing test. The distinction between rate figures is important: the controlled mean daily rate is not a promise that every cased watch will keep that rate in ordinary wear. See Grand Seiko’s current Australian product page for the listed specifications.

How the dimensions and winding routine affect daily wear

At 39.0 mm across and 44.0 mm lug-to-lug, the case has dimensions that are more restrained than many contemporary sports watches, while its 18k rose-gold construction gives it a precious-metal character. The 11.6 mm thickness and dual-curved crystal are part of the overall profile; wrist comfort will still depend on the wearer’s wrist shape and preferred fit.

Caliber 9S64 is manually wound, so the wearer must wind the watch rather than rely on an automatic rotor. Grand Seiko lists an approximately 72-hour power reserve. The 19 mm band width gives a starting point for replacement-strap searches, but width alone does not guarantee that a strap’s attachment, length or buckle will suit the case and wearer; check fit before buying.

Is the SBGW264 suitable for water exposure?

Grand Seiko currently describes the SBGW264 as “Splash Resistant.” That supports treating it as a watch for limited incidental splashes, not as a swimming or diving watch. Although the 2020 release announcement gives a 3 bar rating, the current product page’s plain-language description is the prudent guide for everyday expectations. The current regional listing uses the splash-resistant wording.

Price and availability depend on market and date

Grand Seiko Australia’s product page displayed AUD 36,000 when accessed on October 8, 2026. That is a regional listing, not a universal price or a resale valuation; prices and availability can change. The 120-piece edition quantity was announced in 2020, so prospective buyers should verify whether an example is currently available and assess its condition and provenance with the seller.
