Those dimensions and its 54 g case-only weight make it a compact, light proposition on paper; one reviewer also found it wore smaller than its diameter suggested. The movement specification differs from a May 2025 review, so it is worth checking which generation’s details you are reading.
What is the current Formex Field Automatic?
This article focuses on the current 40 mm Field Automatic Gen 2, not the original Field Automatic introduced in 2022. Formex’s current listing for the Basalt Grey configuration specifies a Grade 2 titanium case, hard-coated to 900 HV, with sapphire crystals on the front and back. The inner surface of the front crystal has anti-reflective treatment. The dial has recessed luminous numerals and a date display.

Formex lists the case at 10.6 mm thick, 46.6 mm from lug to lug, and 20 mm between the lugs. Its stated case-only weight is 54 g. Water resistance is 150 m (15 bar). These figures describe the manufacturer’s current published configuration; strap choice and regional availability may vary. Formex Field Automatic Basalt Grey 40 mm product page
How does it wear?
The 40 mm diameter is only part of the fit picture. The 46.6 mm lug-to-lug measurement gives a better indication of how much wrist space the case spans, while the 10.6 mm height is relevant if you want it to sit low beneath a cuff. Formex lists the case at 54 g without a strap, so the complete watch will weigh more.

In his May 22, 2025 Fratello review, Thomas Van Straaten said the watch wore smaller than he expected from its 40 mm diameter. He also described the supplied Velcro strap and lightweight watch as comfortable. That is one reviewer’s subjective experience, not a guarantee of fit or a controlled comfort test. If possible, compare the 46.6 mm lug-to-lug length with a watch you already wear.
What movement and power reserve does Gen 2 have?
Formex’s current product page specifies a Swiss Sellita SW200-2 Power+ automatic movement with a date display, 26 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 A/h (4 Hz), and a 65-hour power reserve. The listed movement specification is the appropriate reference for the current configuration on that page.
There is a difference between that listing and the dated independent review: Van Straaten’s May 2025 article names a Sellita SW200-1 and a 41-hour reserve. The two sources do not explain whether this reflects a later production update, a specification change, or a discrepancy. Keep the figures tied to their sources rather than treating them as interchangeable. The original 2022 Field Automatic also belongs to an earlier generation and should not be used as a proxy for current Gen 2 specifications. What are the straps and how do they change?
Formex offers nylon/Velcro and leather strap options for the watch. The 20 mm lugs accept straps of that width, and Formex says its straps use quick release so they can be changed without tools. A third-party strap is a plausible option, but 20 mm width alone does not guarantee compatibility: check the strap’s attachment design and fit before buying.

Van Straaten found the Velcro strap comfortable, but said its quick-release bar made tightening somewhat awkward. That practical trade-off may matter if you expect to adjust the strap often.

When the current Formex Basalt Grey product page was consulted, it displayed CHF830 for the selected configuration. The page’s displayed price and availability may change by region and over time. Fratello’s May 2025 review listed US$870 at publication. The amounts are from different sources, dates, currencies and configurations, so they are not a direct price comparison. Check Formex’s listing for the configuration and market you intend to buy in.
What to compare before choosing a field watch
Use measurements and configuration details rather than diameter alone when comparing the Formex with another field-style automatic. A useful checklist is:
Quick Recap
- Fit: Compare case diameter and lug-to-lug length with a watch that suits your wrist; also consider thickness and the weight with the strap fitted.
- Movement: Confirm the movement reference and reserve for the specific generation and listing. The current Formex page and May 2025 review report different specifications.
- Everyday use: Consider the stated 150 m water resistance, dial legibility, date display and crystal details alongside your intended use.
- Strap: Check the supplied material, attachment system and replacement options. Formex’s stated quick-release feature applies to its straps; verify the fit of third-party alternatives.
- Price: Compare the same currency, market, date and strap configuration rather than treating prices from separate listings as equivalent.
