Which Hanhart 417 ES is this?
“417 ES” is not one exact configuration. Hanhart’s collection page covers a broader 417 ES and 415 ES range, while the two current Heritage Flyback product pages reviewed here specify 39 mm and 42 mm versions. Movement and chronograph functions
Both sizes use the hand-wound Sellita AMT5100 M. Hanhart lists a 58-hour power reserve, 4 Hz frequency and 23 jewels for each. Its listed functions are flyback, small seconds, a 30-minute counter, central chronograph seconds and hacking seconds. A flyback chronograph lets the user reset and restart the chronograph in one operation rather than stopping, resetting and starting it through separate presses.

Fit and caseback differences
The 39 mm version is the more compact choice on paper: it measures 46 mm lug-to-lug and takes 20 mm straps. Hanhart describes it as matching the historical original size. The 42 mm version measures 49.75 mm lug-to-lug and uses 21 mm straps, making it the larger-format option. Case diameter alone does not determine fit; lug-to-lug length and wrist shape also matter.
The casebacks distinguish the two references as much as their dimensions do. The 39 mm has a screwed anti-magnetic caseback, with Hanhart specifying resistance up to 16,000 A/m. The 42 mm steel version has a screwed sapphire display back. Choose the former if the stated magnetic resistance and closed back are priorities; choose the latter if seeing the movement is more appealing.

Water resistance
Hanhart rates both cited watches at 10 bar / 10 ATM. That is the manufacturer’s water-resistance specification; it should not be read as a guarantee of suitability for every water activity or condition.

Hanhart’s official search result displayed $4,299 including VAT for the 42 mm steel-bracelet Heritage Flyback. This is a configuration-specific displayed price, accessed in 2026; it does not establish the price of the 39 mm, other strap options, other markets, or current availability. Check the live product page for the price and tax treatment where you plan to buy.

Historical context
Hanhart says it developed the historic 417 as a pilot chronograph for the newly founded German armed forces, emphasizing “robustness, reliability and readability,” and that it supplied the armed forces for almost ten years. This is Hanhart’s account of the model’s history, rather than independently established history in the product information cited here.
