Seiko says sapphire is more scratch-resistant, but that alone does not make it the right choice for every watch or use. The crystal’s shape, mounting, impact conditions, optical treatment, and availability of a correctly fitting replacement all matter.
What Hardlex is—and what it is not
Seiko describes Hardlex as its “proprietary hardened mineral glass.” It belongs to the hardened mineral-glass family, but it is a distinct material from sapphire. Seiko’s FAQ says the company mainly uses two types of glass: hardened mineral glass (Hardlex) and sapphire crystal, which it identifies as more scratch-resistant. Seiko’s FAQ

Hardlex is not one universal shape or configuration. Seiko lists standard, curved, dual-curved, and magnified-date-window forms on Seiko 5 Sports variants, depending on the reference. Check the exact watch’s product page or parts information rather than assuming that every Seiko—or every Seiko 5—has the same crystal. Seiko 5 Sports

Hardlex, sapphire, mineral glass, and acrylic compared
| Crystal type | What to know | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hardlex | Seiko-branded hardened mineral glass. | Seiko describes sapphire as more scratch-resistant. Hardlex’s shape and specifications vary by watch reference. |
| Sapphire | A separate crystal material used on some Seiko watches. | Seiko identifies it as more scratch-resistant than Hardlex. That does not mean it cannot crack or chip. |
| Ordinary mineral glass | A broad category of glass crystals; Hardlex is hardened mineral glass. | Do not assume every ordinary mineral crystal behaves exactly like every Hardlex design. |
| Acrylic | Another common watch-crystal material. | Its repair and impact behavior depend on the particular crystal and watch construction. |
The available manufacturer descriptions do not provide a controlled, quantified durability test comparing Hardlex and sapphire, nor do they establish a universal impact-resistance winner. Scratch resistance is only one part of the decision: the location and type of impact, reflections or coatings, crystal profile and mounting, and the practicalities of repair can all matter. - Size - Diameter: 35mm / 1.38" (diameter tolerance is +/-0.05mm.); edge thickness: 1mm / 0.04". Please use a precision caliper to measure the diameter/thickness before purchasing. Do not use tools with low precision such as soft rulers, straight rulers.
- Material - Made of quality sapphire crystal glass, watch lens provide excellent hardness and scratch resistance, durable and long-lasting. The hardness test of sapphire is 9, second only to diamond. The flat round sapphire glass has a smooth surface, adding a touch of sophistication to the watch.
- Features - Clear and transparent, scratch-resistant, wear-resistant, no scratches, polishing and chamfering surface technology. Providing clear dial visibility, ensuring accuracy without distortion. The sapphire glass adopts a flat round design, providing a classic and elegant look to the watch.
- Applications - Sapphire glass lenses are widely used in luxury watches, sports watches, dive watches and fashion watches. These lenses are quality, durable, highly scratch-resistant to withstand rough use, water-resistant, and clear enough to add a touch of elegance to fashion watches.
- Notes - Clean the sapphire glass lens with a soft, lint-free cloth. While sapphire glass is very durable, avoid strong impacts or hitting the watch against hard surfaces to prevent damage. Although sapphire glass is water-resistant, make sure your watch is also water-resistant before placing it in water.
Which crystal makes sense for your use?
Choose by the kind of wear you expect
- If avoiding scratches is your main priority, sapphire is the option Seiko describes as more scratch-resistant than Hardlex.
- If you are comparing two specific watches, consider the whole watch and its crystal configuration—not just the material name. The exact profile, mounting, and available replacement parts are reference-specific.
- If you expect knocks, do not infer a guaranteed impact advantage from the material label alone. The supplied manufacturer descriptions do not establish a universal ranking for impact resistance.
Check the actual specification
Look up the exact model or reference in the manufacturer’s product information or parts documentation. A general collection page may describe several variants, and one family can include different crystal shapes or materials.
Replacing a scratched or broken crystal
A model-specific replacement may be a repair option, but a part that fits one watch is not automatically suitable for another. Before buying a replacement or considering a sapphire upgrade, verify the reference, diameter, thickness, curvature, and mounting. A Seiko crystal-code reference uses J for Hardlex (inorganic tempered glass) and S for sapphire; treat the code as a parts-reference aid and confirm the correct catalogue entry for the watch. Installation is model- and skill-dependent; a general-purpose crystal press or repair kit is not guaranteed to suit a particular watch. If the watch is water-resistant, have a qualified repairer check the seal and pressure-test it after service. The cited material does not establish that a crystal swap will preserve water resistance.

What the available comparisons establish
Seiko’s descriptions support a clear distinction: Hardlex is hardened mineral glass, while sapphire is a separate, more scratch-resistant option. They do not give a quantified difference, an official Hardlex hardness figure, or a universal verdict about which material handles impacts better. Avoid treating scratch resistance as a guarantee against breakage—or assuming that a crystal upgrade will fit without checking the watch’s exact reference.
