An automatic watch uses wrist movement to wind a mainspring, then releases the spring’s stored energy through a regulated mechanical system to move the hands. It does not run forever: if left unworn longer than its model-specific power reserve, it will stop.
How an automatic watch turns movement into time
An automatic watch is a mechanical watch with an added self-winding mechanism. Its rotor moves as the watch shifts on your wrist, and the winding mechanism uses that motion to wind the mainspring. Some automatic movements can also be wound by turning the crown, but the supported method and instructions vary by caliber. TAG Heuer explains the rotor’s role, while Orient describes rotor winding and crown winding.

- The rotor gathers motion. A weighted rotor pivots as the watch moves, supplying energy to the winding mechanism.
- The mainspring stores energy. Winding tightens the spring inside the movement; as it unwinds, it supplies the power that keeps the watch running.
- The gear train transmits energy. Gears carry the spring’s power through the movement and drive the hands.
- The escapement regulates the release. Rather than letting the spring unwind all at once, the escapement meters the gear train’s motion. Its pallet fork interacts with the balance wheel, whose repeated oscillations regulate timekeeping.
In short, the rotor gathers energy, the mainspring stores it, the gears transmit it, and the escapement and balance regulate its release. Longines also outlines the automatic mechanism.
What happens when you take it off?
Power reserve is how long a watch can run on the energy already stored in its mainspring, without further winding. It is specific to the watch and movement, not a fixed property of all automatic watches.

If a watch remains unworn beyond its reserve, it stops. You will need to restore its energy by winding or wearing it, then follow the manufacturer’s instructions for setting and restarting that particular model. Wrist motion provides a way to wind the watch; it does not give it unlimited power. Hamilton notes that an automatic watch can stop when the rotor has not been activated enough for longer than its specified reserve.
Automatic, manual-wind, and quartz: what differs?
Automatic and manual-wind watches are both mechanical timekeepers. They use a mainspring, gears, and a regulating mechanism. An automatic movement adds a rotor and winding system that can wind the mainspring from motion; a manual-wind movement is wound by hand. Depending on the caliber, an automatic watch may also support winding at the crown.

What affects accuracy and ownership?
Automatic winding describes how a mechanical watch receives energy, not how precisely it keeps time. The rate depends on the movement and its regulating system. NOMOS Glashütte identifies the escapement as a key determinant of mechanical accuracy in its explanation of mechanical watches.

- Check the exact movement specification. Power reserve, accuracy information, and winding or setting functions are model-specific; use the manufacturer’s documentation for the watch you own.
- Do not assume a universal service schedule. The guidance here does not establish one interval for all mechanical watches. Consult the current manual or manufacturer guidance for your model. Hamilton directs owners to authorized service centers or official retailers for professional work.
- Do not force the crown. NOMOS Glashütte says of the automatic watches it describes: “Overwinding is therefore impossible with automatic watches; neither turning the crown too hard nor moving it too much can damage the winding mechanism.” That statement applies to the watches covered by its explanation; it is not a reason to force a crown or a guarantee about every design.
For a specific watch, the useful details to check are its published power reserve, accuracy specification, supported winding and setting functions, water resistance for your intended use, wearing comfort, and available service support.
