Why the Sultan of Oman ordered the watches
Christie’s says the collaboration between Sultan Qaboos and Rolex began in the early 1970s. In its account, the Sultan wished to thank members of the British Special Forces (SAS) who had assisted him during the conflict with rebels between 1970 and 1976. Christie’s says he continued ordering different Rolex models as gifts recognizing service. Catalogue descriptions identify the emblem as the Khanjar, a traditional Omani dagger and national symbol. One documented presentation box bears the Khanjar with crossed swords, Oman’s national emblem. The mark can appear on the dial, caseback, or box, and its color and position vary from watch to watch.

There is no single “Khanjar Rolex” model
“Rolex Sultan of Oman,” “Rolex Khanjar,” “Khanjar Rolex,” “Rolex Sultan Qaboos,” and “Omani signed Rolex” are search terms used for this group of customized watches, not formal names for a single Rolex model. Auction catalogues describe different references and configurations:

How Asprey and Khimji Ramdas fit the story
Asprey of London is associated with early commissions: Christie’s records it as the retailer that sold the 1974 Daytona to Oman. Sotheby’s also describes early Khanjar watches commissioned through Asprey, while noting that other Middle Eastern retailers were involved. It identifies Khimji Ramdas, an Omani retailer, with later commissions, including the 1984 Day-Date reference 18059. The records do not support treating any one retailer as the source of every Khanjar Rolex.
What to check when assessing an individual watch
Because the watches vary, evaluate the specific object rather than relying on the “Khanjar Rolex” label. Useful points to compare include:

- Reference and date: Match the watch’s reference and manufacture or approximate date to the catalogue record.
- Emblem: Check its color, dial position, and whether it is crowned; also look for a separate caseback engraving.
- Retailer marks: Note any retailer engraving, such as Asprey on the caseback.
- Supporting materials: Record whether the watch is accompanied by a box, guarantee, tag, gift card, or personal correspondence. The Daytona catalogue, for example, describes both a presentation box and a personal card.
- Condition: Consider the condition of the watch and its markings alongside the catalogue description.
- Provenance: Separate what can be physically described—such as an engraving or accompanying card—from an auction house’s historical inference about a recipient or the reason for a gift.
What is established—and what remains uncounted
Christie’s provides the clearest named institutional account of the commissions’ origin, but the cited account is not a direct statement from Rolex, Sultan Qaboos, or an Omani government source. The auction records document individual watches; they do not establish a total number produced, ordered, or given to recipients. Sotheby’s estimate of five applies only to the particular 1984 Rainbow Khanjar configuration it describes.
