Harwood watches stand out less for conventional styling than for an unusual control scheme: a crownless case with a bezel used for functions normally handled by the crown. The name also carries genuine watchmaking history. John Harwood developed an early self-winding wristwatch system, and Fortis brought the Harwood automatic into serial production in 1926. A later Harwood-branded model, the 516.10.15.M, shows how the name’s distinctive design language resurfaced.
What makes a Harwood watch different?
In the later Harwood range described by Jura Watches in 2015, the case has no crown. A fluted, bidirectional bezel takes over setting and manual-winding functions, while a red indicator at six o’clock signals the watch’s mode. Those features make the bezel more than a decorative ring: it is part of the watch’s interface.
The arrangement is a clear departure from the familiar crown-at-three layout. Whether it looks elegant or fussy is subjective; the practical point is that the control is visible and unusual. How John Harwood’s invention became a production watch
John Harwood, a British watchmaker, set out to make a mechanical wristwatch that did not need routine hand-winding. Fortis’s account says Harwood patented his system in Switzerland in 1924. Its winding weight moved through a limited arc, rather than rotating continuously through a full circle, and transferred energy to the mainspring. The invention and its industrial production belong to related but distinct parts of the story. Fortis says it partnered with Harwood, and that the first Fortis Harwood automatic wristwatches left the manufacture on 13 July 1926. That is the milestone Fortis identifies with the beginning of serial production of the automatic wristwatch; it does not mean Harwood alone carried out the manufacturing.
Fortis estimates that around 30,000 Harwood automatic watches were produced in the late 1920s. That is Fortis’s 2026 estimate, not an independently verified production census. The historical achievement is still significant: Harwood’s work helped move automatic winding from an invention into serially made wristwatches.

What the Harwood 516.10.15.M offers
Jura Watches lists the Silver Opaline Bracelet, reference 516.10.15.M, as a 39 mm automatic watch in steel. Its product page gives the following specifications:

The retailer’s product listing describes the bezel as the winding control, while its 2015 range announcement says the bezel handles both setting and manual winding. The available descriptions do not explain how manual winding works alongside the listed automatic movement, and they do not provide a movement calibre or technical specification. It is best to treat the bezel’s stated role as a design feature, not infer details about the mechanism that the retailer has not supplied. Jura Watches’ 516.10.15.M listing

Is a Harwood watch currently available?
Jura’s individual 516.10.15.M product page remains indexed, but the retailer’s Harwood collection page currently says no products have been loaded. That mismatch means the model is documented, but live stock or current availability is uncertain; a product page alone does not establish that a watch can presently be ordered. The 516.10.15.M is worth considering on paper if you want a steel automatic with an uncommon bezel-based interface and a silver dial rather than a standard crown-led layout. Before deciding, look at the case and bezel closely and make sure the control arrangement appeals to you. The listed specifications answer basic questions about size, materials and water resistance, but they do not establish on-wrist comfort, legibility in varied lighting, movement performance or comparative accuracy. Those points require evidence beyond a retailer listing.
