Introduced in 2022 for the Autavia collection’s 60th anniversary, it is no longer listed as an active U.S. model: TAG Heuer’s U.S. product page marks it discontinued. That makes this a look back at the watch’s design and travel function, not a report on a new release.
What the Autavia GMT COSC is
TAG Heuer calls the model the Autavia GMT COSC Automatic, 42 mm, Steel. Its exact reference is WBE511A.BA0650. The watch combines a blue sunray-brushed dial with a blue-and-black 24-hour bezel, a steel case and bracelet, and the brand’s Calibre 7 COSC GMT automatic movement. TAG Heuer lists hours, minutes, seconds, date and GMT among its functions, along with 100 m water resistance. TAG Heuer’s U.S. product page currently marks this reference discontinued.
The Autavia name joins “automotive” and “aviation,” a nod to Heuer’s dashboard timing instruments. TAG Heuer’s official magazine identifies WBE511A.BA0650 among the 2022 releases marking the collection’s 60th anniversary; a contemporary hands-on review described it as the collection’s first GMT. TAG Heuer’s anniversary history and Time+Tide’s January 2022 hands-on provide that launch context.

There is a published discrepancy in power-reserve figures. TAG Heuer’s currently accessible U.S. specification gives 42 hours, while Time+Tide’s 2022 article says 50 hours and identifies the movement’s base as the Sellita SW 300-1. For the manufacturer’s present specification, 42 hours is the appropriate figure; the two numbers should not be combined or treated as equivalent.

How its GMT function helps when traveling
The useful travel feature is an independently set 24-hour GMT hand. As Ricardo Sime described in the 2022 hands-on, the wearer can align that hand with another time zone without changing the local-time display. That makes it possible to keep local time on the main hands while monitoring a second zone, such as home time, on the GMT hand and bezel scale.
The rotating bezel also carries a 24-hour scale and can be used with the GMT hand to read a second zone. TAG Heuer describes it as a turning bezel; the available information does not establish it as a unidirectional dive-timing bezel, so it should not be treated as one. The watch’s 100 m water-resistance rating is a specification, not a substitute for checking the manufacturer’s guidance on use and care.

Design and wear notes from the 2022 hands-on
Sime’s review describes a blue sunburst dial, bright orange GMT hand, and blue-and-black bezel, giving the watch a more restrained look than some of the Autavia line’s more overtly tool-like designs. The review also notes the mix of polished and brushed case surfaces, a large crown and quick-release bracelet end links. These are the reviewer’s observations rather than results of an independent test.
The reported 50 mm lug-to-lug span and 13.5 mm thickness are useful context alongside the 42 mm case diameter when considering fit, though wrist comfort is personal. TAG Heuer says the bracelet can be changed using its quick-release button. That feature does not, by itself, confirm compatibility with any particular generic or third-party strap.
Price and availability: separate the launch figures from current listings
The model’s prices vary by source, market and date. Time+Tide’s 2022 review reports a launch price of A$6,100 in its availability discussion and lists US$4,200 in its specification block. TAG Heuer’s U.S. page, accessed in 2026, displays $5,400 while marking the reference discontinued; the displayed amount is not evidence of current stock or an active retail offer. TAG Heuer India’s collection page showed ₹612,000 when accessed in 2026, but that regional catalog listing does not establish that this exact reference is currently orderable there. Check a seller’s location, condition, reference and stock status before relying on any listing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Autavia GMT COSC a good travel watch?
Its clearest travel advantage is practical rather than complicated: a separately set GMT hand tracks another time zone while the main hands continue to show local time. The rotating 24-hour bezel offers another way to interpret that display, and the steel case, bracelet and 100 m water-resistance rating make it a versatile everyday specification set on paper. Against that, the 42 mm case and reported 50 mm lug-to-lug measurement may feel substantial on smaller wrists, and its discontinued status means buyers need to verify availability and condition rather than assume they can order it new.
Rank #4
For a traveler choosing one, the key questions are whether the independent GMT hand suits their way of tracking home time, whether the dimensions fit comfortably, and whether a trustworthy seller has the exact WBE511A.BA0650 reference. The evidence here supports those points, but does not establish real-world timekeeping accuracy or compare the watch’s performance against competing models.
