Yes: the TAG Heuer Monaco Sixty Nine pairs a traditional hand-wound mechanical watch on one side with a digital quartz chronograph on the other. To switch displays, you physically turn its reversible case over. Presented at Basel in 2003, it is best understood today as an experimental historical model, not a current catalog watch.

What makes the Monaco Sixty Nine different?

The square case carries two distinct watch faces and two independent movements. One side uses the Monaco’s familiar analog design language; turn the case around and the other side presents a digital display with timing functions. The Fondation du Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) describes it as a synthesis of two TAG Heuer icons, linking the square Monaco face with the high-tech look of the Microtimer. GPHG’s model record places its presentation at the Basel watch fair in 2003.

The original user manual calls it “the world’s first reversible chronograph” to combine a traditional mechanical watch with a digital chronograph. That is TAG Heuer’s claim as reproduced in the manual, rather than an independently adjudicated historical ranking. The reproduced manual also describes digital timing accurate to 1/1000 second.

How do the two movements work?

Face Movement What it does
Analog Hand-wound Peseux 7001 mechanical movement Traditional hands; GPHG lists a 42-hour power reserve. The manual says a fully wound spring provides more than 42 hours.
Digital HR03 quartz movement Battery-powered digital timekeeping and timing features, including 1/1000-second timing.

The movement identifications and model figures come from GPHG’s model record; the reserve and operating details are also described in the user manual. The two sides therefore have different power and upkeep needs: the analog side relies on a wound spring, while the digital side relies on a battery.

How do you switch between the analog and digital displays?

You turn the watch over rather than changing a setting. The manual’s procedure is to raise the case to its stop, rotate it 180 degrees, then press it back into place. This reversible construction makes both faces available on the same watch, but it is a physical case movement—not an electronic mode switch.

What can the digital side do?

The manual lists six digital modes. F1 is described as timekeeping, while the chronograph and lap functions address timing; the remaining modes cover everyday time and a second zone.

Rank #2
  • T1: time and date.
  • AL: alarm.
  • F1: timekeeping.
  • BEST LP: consultation of the stored best lap.
  • Ch: chronograph.
  • T2: second time zone.

The manual describes digital timing to 1/1000 second. That is the stated precision of the digital function, not a claim about the accuracy of the mechanical movement.

What else is documented in the specifications?

The reproduced manual lists sapphire crystals on both faces, anti-reflective treatment on the digital face, luminous hands, and an alligator strap with a folding buckle and push-button safety clasp. It gives a water-resistance rating of 50 m. These are historical model specifications; they do not establish the present condition of any particular pre-owned watch.

What should an owner know about winding, batteries, and service?

Winding the mechanical face

The manual says the analog face can stop when its spring runs down and directs the wearer to wind it using the crown in position 1. It recommends mechanical-side servicing every two years. These are the reproduced manual’s instructions, not confirmation of current TAG Heuer service policy; check with TAG Heuer or an authorized service provider for guidance appropriate to an individual watch.

Replacing the digital battery

A flashing “BT” indicator means the battery should be replaced immediately by a TAG Heuer dealer, according to the manual. Its FAQ estimates typical lithium-battery life at two to three years, depending on use of functions such as the alarm and backlight. That manual-era estimate is conditional, not a prediction for a particular watch or replacement battery.

Taking care around water

The manual warns that waterproofing seals can deteriorate over time. A vintage example should not be immersed just because its original specifications list 50 m resistance; the rating alone cannot establish that its seals remain sound. Have water resistance assessed before exposing an individual watch to water.

How does it fit into the Monaco story?

The Sixty Nine extends the Monaco family’s square-case identity in an unusually literal way: instead of putting two kinds of movement under one dial, it gives each movement its own face. TAG Heuer’s account of the wider Monaco story traces the design to 1969 and the automatic Calibre 11 era, and says Steve McQueen wore a Monaco while filming Le Mans in 1970. That is family context; it does not mean the Sixty Nine appeared in the film. TAG Heuer’s magazine account covers that broader history.

What to check if you are considering a pre-owned example

The model is also referred to as the Monaco 69. Since it is a historical watch rather than a current catalog offering, assess the specific example rather than assuming that old specifications describe its present condition.

  • Confirm the model and reference against reliable documentation.
  • Ask about service history and the condition of both the mechanical and digital functions.
  • Check the case’s reversible action, both displays, and any included papers or box.
  • Have water resistance tested if it matters to you; do not infer it from the manual’s rating alone.
  • Evaluate the seller and the particular listing carefully. The available model information does not establish current inventory or a reliable market price.
