In a short SIHH presentation, Hodinkee’s Jon Bues found that it wore larger than its 41 mm diameter suggests and that its chronograph subdials were not especially quick to read. Those impressions make it more compelling as a distinctive, versatile-looking watch than as a straightforward timing instrument.
What makes the Arceau Chrono Titane distinctive?
The Arceau collection was designed by Henri d’Origny and introduced in 1978. Its signature lugs evoke a stirrup; on the Chrono Titane, their asymmetry gives the watch a less conventional outline than a standard round chronograph. Hodinkee’s 2017 introduction described the case as grade 2 titanium, while its 2018 hands-on account specifies a bead-blasted titanium finish.
Hodinkee describes a 41 mm case, rounded piston-style pushers, a galvanic black dial, a date display and chronograph indications. The reported strap options are tan Barenia calfskin and black embossed Barenia calfskin. The result, as presented in the hands-on article, sits between a traditional dress watch and a sporty chronograph rather than adopting the familiar tool-watch look.
How does it wear and read?
Wrist presence and weight
Jon Bues reported that the asymmetrical lugs made the watch wear larger than its nominal 41 mm diameter, while the titanium case felt light. These are his impressions from a 30-minute presentation at SIHH, not measurements or a long-term wear assessment. A buyer considering the fit should therefore treat 41 mm as the case diameter, not a complete guide to how the watch will look on their wrist.
#1 Best Overall
- Brushed stainless steel watch featuring round dial with chronograph sub-dials, large Arabic numeral indices, and decorative hands
- 51mm stainless steel case with mineral dial window
- Japanese quartz movement with analog display
- Three-link stainless steel band featuring fold-over clasp with Micro Adjust closure
- Water resistant to 200 m (660 ft): In general, suitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports, but not scuba diving.
Chronograph legibility
Bues described the dial numerals as slanted cursive and found the chronograph subdials challenging to read at a glance during the presentation. That matters if you want a chronograph primarily for fast, unambiguous timing. The account does not establish how the watch performs in every lighting condition or during extended use.
What movement does it use?
The 2018 hands-on article identifies the automatic movement as an ETA 2894, with 37 jewels and a 42-hour power reserve. The earlier 2017 introduction gives the jewel count and reserve but does not name the caliber. The caliber identification is therefore specific to the later account; neither source describes it as a Hermès manufacture chronograph movement.

- Case Size: 45.00 mm, Band Width: 22 mm, Case Thickness: 11.02 mm
- Swiss quartz movement, 316L stainless steel case, Index + Arabic dial type, Date
- Leather bracelet, standard buckle closure
- Water-resistant up to a pressure of 10 bar (100 m / 330 ft): suitable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but no diving or snorkeling.
How do the two strap options change its character?
Bues felt the tan Barenia calfskin strap suited a daytime look. He said the black embossed Barenia strap changed the watch’s character, with ridges near the lugs recalling racing straps. These are the reviewer’s style impressions rather than a claim that either version is more versatile for every wearer.
What did it cost at launch, and is it available now?
Hodinkee reported an original US retail price of $5,100 and availability beginning in February 2018, both in its November 2017 introduction and January 2018 hands-on article. That is launch-era pricing, not a current Hermès price or a guide to resale value. The historical coverage does not establish present stock or availability.

Who is the Arceau Chrono Titane for?
Bues’s judgment was that the watch better suits someone seeking a distinctive chronograph that can be dressed up or down than someone prioritizing a conventional, highly legible timing instrument. The practical tradeoff is clear: the unusual lugs and light titanium case offer a different look and feel, while the reviewer’s experience suggests the chronograph indications may take more effort to read quickly.
