Choose the Bell & Ross BR 05 if you prioritize a stronger integrated-sports identity, 100 m water resistance, a slightly longer power reserve, or the lower cited US price. At the published prices, the H08 is the design-led choice; the BR 05 is the more practical-value and industrial-sports choice.
Hermès H08 and Bell & Ross BR 05 at a glance
These watches occupy a similar broad category—modern luxury sports watches with automatic movements—but they interpret it very differently. The H08 is a softened, cushion-shaped design with a fitted rubber strap and an unusual composite case. The BR 05 is more overtly architectural: its square case, exposed screws and integrated-bracelet design draw directly on Bell & Ross’s instrument-panel aesthetic.

The prices differ by US$1,700 before tax. That is a meaningful premium for the H08, but the figures are not a like-for-like statement about every reference in either collection: the BR 05 price above is specifically for the black ceramic model, while steel BR 05 references have a different bracelet configuration and are the clearest expression of the integrated-bracelet concept.
Design: softened cushion versus instrument-panel square
What defines the H08
The H08’s case is nominally 39 mm wide, but its 42 mm lug-to-lug measurement gives it more wrist presence than the width alone suggests. Its softened cushion profile avoids the hard-edged geometry associated with many integrated sports watches. Hermès typography and carefully shaped numerals make the dial feel more like a design object than a literal cockpit instrument.

The cited configuration combines a braided glass-fiber composite case, a coating made with aluminum and slate powder, a black ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal and an orange fitted rubber strap. The orange strap is a strong visual decision: it turns the watch into a deliberate accent rather than a neutral everyday sports watch. Other H08 configurations may use different colors or straps, so confirm the exact reference before ordering.
What defines the BR 05
The BR 05 uses a 41 mm square case with the rounded corners and bold, legible geometry associated with Bell & Ross. Visible screws reinforce the technical, dashboard-inspired language. The black ceramic reference pairs that case with a black rubber strap, sapphire crystal and a screw-down crown. A sapphire caseback allows the wearer to see the movement.
Bell & Ross’s steel BR 05 models make the integrated architecture more explicit than the rubber-strap ceramic reference. The first bracelet link forms part of the case, so the bracelet does not simply attach to conventional lugs. As co-founder and creative director Bruno Belamich puts it: “This integration of case and bracelet is not only in line with the brand’s visual identity, it also brings another dimension to the watch: the first link forms part of the case.”

H08: composite construction with a ceramic bezel
The H08’s braided glass-fiber composite is materially different from the steel cases common in this segment. Composite construction can allow a watch to feel less dense on the wrist than a comparably sized metal case; that is an inference from the material choice, not a hands-on weight measurement. The ceramic bezel adds scratch resistance and a crisp contrast against the darker composite case.
The fitted rubber strap follows the case rather than leaving a gap at the lugs. That should help the watch read as one continuous shape, while the strap’s flexibility can accommodate wrist movement. Actual comfort still depends on wrist circumference, the strap’s adjustment range and how tightly you wear it.

BR 05: ceramic or steel with a more substantial visual footprint
The black ceramic BR 05 is also expected to feel less dense than a similarly sized steel case, although no measured weight is established here. Ceramic is hard and resistant to many everyday scratches, but it can be less forgiving of sharp impacts than steel; treat the case accordingly. The 41 mm width and square outline create a broad visual footprint even before the strap or bracelet is considered.
Steel BR 05 references will have a different mass and feel from the ceramic model. Their integrated bracelets spread the watch’s visual and physical presence across the wrist. Because case shape, first-link geometry and wrist curvature interact, published dimensions cannot determine which watch will feel more comfortable.

Movement, calendar and power reserve
Hermès Manufacture H1837
The H08 uses Hermès’ Manufacture H1837 automatic movement. Its stated power reserve is 50 hours, and the date aperture sits at 4:30. A reserve of 50 hours lets the watch run through a normal overnight period and into part of the following day when fully wound, but it will stop sooner than a movement with a full 72-hour reserve if left unworn for an extended period.
The date at 4:30 is an intentional design placement that preserves the H08’s dial balance. It is less conventional than a 3 o’clock date and may appeal to buyers who want the calendar function without making it the dominant dial feature.
BR-CAL.321-1
The BR 05 Black Ceramic is powered by Bell & Ross’s BR-CAL.321-1 automatic movement. Its stated reserve is 54 hours—four hours longer than the H08’s published figure—and it includes a date display. In practical use, that difference is modest: both watches cover a typical night off the wrist, while neither is designed around the convenience of a multi-day reserve.

The sapphire caseback on the cited BR 05 reference provides a view of the movement. The H08’s cited specifications identify the H1837 movement and its reserve but do not establish a comparable caseback treatment in the supplied product details, so the two should not be assumed to offer the same display-back experience.

Water resistance and real-world water use
H08: 10 bar
The H08 is rated to 10 bar. That is a substantial everyday rating for rain, hand-washing and surface swimming when the crown is properly secured, but the rating should not be treated as a guarantee for every water activity or condition. Water resistance can decline as seals age, and a watch should not be operated underwater unless its instructions specifically allow it.
BR 05: 100 m
The BR 05 Black Ceramic is rated to 100 m and has a screw-down crown. That gives it a clearer advantage for frequent swimming and generally wet environments, assuming the crown is fully tightened and the watch is maintained according to the manufacturer’s guidance. A 100 m rating still does not automatically make a watch suitable for scuba diving, high-pressure water sports or use with a crown left open.
If water exposure is a deciding factor, the BR 05 wins on the published specification. The H08’s 10-bar rating is adequate for many daily situations, but it offers less stated margin than 100 m.
Strap and bracelet integration
H08’s fitted rubber-strap approach
The H08’s orange rubber strap is shaped to meet the case cleanly. It creates an integrated visual effect without using a metal bracelet and keeps the overall design sporty and contemporary. Rubber is also practical around sweat and rain, although the bright color makes replacement matching more reference-specific than a conventional black strap.

BR 05’s integrated-bracelet architecture
The BR 05 collection is more closely tied to the classic integrated-sports-watch brief. On steel references, the bracelet’s first link is part of the case, eliminating the visual break created by ordinary lugs. That construction is the strongest reason to choose the BR 05 if “integrated bracelet” is the central requirement.
The cited black ceramic model comes on a black rubber strap rather than a steel bracelet, so its ownership experience is not identical to the steel versions. Select the exact reference based on whether you want ceramic’s dark, uniform appearance or the bracelet-led identity of a steel BR 05.
How the dimensions translate to wrist fit
The H08’s 39 mm width sounds smaller than the BR 05’s 41 mm case, but the H08’s published 42 mm lug-to-lug height means the difference may be less obvious on the wrist. Lug-to-lug distance often has a greater effect on whether a watch overhangs a smaller wrist than case width alone, while the BR 05’s square case distributes its width differently.
- For smaller wrists: the H08’s narrower case may be easier to center, but its 42 mm lug-to-lug figure still needs checking.
- For medium wrists: both should be plausible candidates; strap curvature and case shape will determine the visual balance.
- For larger wrists: the BR 05’s 41 mm square profile may look more proportionate, while the H08’s cushion form offers a less conventional alternative.
These are fit guidelines, not comfort measurements. Published dimensions do not establish how either watch will sit on a particular wrist. Try both, ideally with the exact strap or bracelet reference you intend to buy.

| Question | H08 answer | BR 05 answer |
|---|---|---|
| Which costs less on the cited US pages? | No | Yes, by US$1,700 before tax |
| What supports the higher H08 price? | Distinctive composite-and-ceramic construction, Hermès design language and the H1837 manufacture movement | Not applicable; its lower price is paired with ceramic construction, 100 m water resistance and the BR-CAL.321-1 movement |
| Is the comparison universal across the ranges? | No; the cited figure is for the referenced H08 configuration | No; the cited figure is specifically for the Black Ceramic reference, while steel BR 05 models differ |
The premium is easiest to justify when the H08’s shape, materials and Hermès-specific details are the main attraction. If you are evaluating specifications per dollar, the BR 05 gives you more water resistance and a slightly longer stated reserve while costing less at the cited US prices.
Which watch suits which buyer?
Choose the Hermès H08 when individuality comes first
- You want a case that looks unlike a conventional steel integrated sports watch.
- You value composite and ceramic materials more than a traditional bracelet.
- You prefer a softened cushion profile and fashion-led typography.
- The Hermès Manufacture H1837 is an important part of the purchase decision.
- You are comfortable paying US$1,700 more for design and material character rather than maximum water resistance.
Choose the Bell & Ross BR 05 when utility and architecture come first
- You want the clearest integrated-bracelet identity, especially in a steel reference.
- 100 m water resistance matters for frequent swimming or wet-weather use.
- You prefer a square, instrument-inspired case with visible screws.
- A 54-hour reserve is preferable to 50 hours, even though the difference is modest.
- You want the lower cited US price.
What to check before ordering
- Confirm the exact reference. H08 and BR 05 collections include multiple colors, straps and case materials. The specifications here apply to the cited H08 and BR 05 Black Ceramic references unless explicitly noted.
- Measure your wrist and compare lug geometry. Do not use 39 mm versus 41 mm as the only fit test; the H08’s 42 mm lug-to-lug figure and the BR 05’s square case change the way each wears.
- Decide how much water exposure you expect. The BR 05’s published 100 m rating is the safer specification-led choice; the H08 is rated to 10 bar.
- Choose strap architecture deliberately. Select the H08 for its fitted rubber-strap look, the ceramic BR 05 for a black rubber presentation, or a steel BR 05 if the integrated bracelet itself is the priority.
- Check the date display in person or in detailed photographs. The H08 places its date at 4:30; the cited BR 05 specification confirms a date but does not state its position.
- Budget for tax and ownership service. The quoted US prices are before tax, and neither figure establishes future service costs, strap prices or regional pricing.
Verdict
The Hermès H08 and Bell & Ross BR 05 are not interchangeable answers to the same design brief. The H08 is the more individual watch: composite construction, a ceramic bezel, a softened cushion case, orange fitted rubber and Hermès typography give it a personality that does not depend on a conventional integrated bracelet. Its H1837 manufacture movement strengthens that design-led proposition, but its 10-bar rating and higher price make the purchase less about specification maximization.
The BR 05 is the more literal integrated-sports watch. Its square, dashboard-inspired case and first-link-as-case architecture—most clearly expressed by the steel references—make the bracelet part of the identity. The Black Ceramic model adds 100 m water resistance, a screw-down crown, a sapphire caseback and a 54-hour reserve while costing US$1,700 less than the cited H08 in the United States.
Buy the H08 if you will notice and value its unusual materials and Hermès design every day. Buy the BR 05 if you want the stronger integrated-watch silhouette, greater published water resistance and better value at the cited prices.
