Picked up this Bulova “Royal Oak” from a friend. Homage or not, I love it. The name is best treated as a collector nickname, though, and the available evidence does not confirm that this particular reference was designed by Gérald Genta or has a documented direct link to the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak.
Why this Bulova caught my eye
What I like is the watch on the wrist: the steel case and integrated bracelet give it the confident, connected look that makes the Royal Oak comparison understandable. That resemblance is my impression, not proof of a design relationship. I can appreciate the watch without settling the historical label first.

What the Ref. 442010 listing actually says
A Momentum Dubai listing is titled as a 1979 Bulova Royal Oak Ref. 442010. Its specification table, however, gives the reference as 4420101—a one-digit discrepancy worth checking against the individual watch rather than glossing over. The listing reports a 35 mm stainless-steel case, integrated stainless-steel bracelet, white honeycomb dial, mineral crystal, automatic movement and date. The listing marks its example sold, so it does not establish current availability or a value for another watch. It also says vintage watches are not guaranteed water-resistant. That is a seller caveat, not evidence about this individual watch; don’t assume it is safe around water.
How I’d check the identity of the watch
Before treating the reference or date as settled, compare the watch itself with any documentation and have its components assessed. A listing can point to a possible match, but it cannot authenticate a watch received from a friend.

- Read the caseback. Record the markings and reference exactly as they appear; note whether they match 442010, 4420101, or something else.
- Check the movement and dial. Have a qualified watchmaker identify the movement and examine whether the dial and other visible details are consistent with the claimed model. Appearance alone is not proof of originality.
- Gather any paperwork. Compare service records, receipts or other documentation with the watch’s markings. Missing paperwork does not by itself prove the watch is inauthentic.
- Ask for an inspection if certainty matters. A watchmaker can assess identity and condition more directly than a seller-page description. Do not infer water resistance from age, appearance or the listing.
The label matters less than the watch
I’m happy to call mine a Bulova “Royal Oak” as a collector-style nickname, while keeping the uncertainty attached to that name. Whether “homage” is the right term is not resolved by the available sources: they do not establish enough design history to prove or disprove a direct relationship. What I can say is that I enjoy the look and the story of receiving it from a friend. For me, that is enough.
