The Seiko Presage Arita porcelain dial is compelling because it makes the dial a piece of Japanese ceramic craft, not just a surface for displaying the time. Its appeal is tactile-looking color and handmade variation; the buying decision, however, should turn on the exact reference. Arita models differ in case size, water resistance, movement functions, and whether they come on a bracelet or strap.
What is a Seiko Presage Arita porcelain dial?
It is a porcelain watch dial made in Arita, Japan, with Seiko working alongside local craftspeople. Seiko describes the dial as roughly 1 mm high, curved from the indexes toward the center, and made using precision molds, high-temperature firing, glazing, and additional firings. The process is supervised by master craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi, according to Seiko’s Arita craftsmanship overview.

Seiko says the porcelain is “more than four times harder than usual porcelain” and describes firing at “1,300 degrees.” Those are the maker’s own statements; the cited page does not identify a temperature scale, and the hardness comparison is not an independent test result.
What changes visually—and what variation to expect
Porcelain gives these dials a depth and finish unlike a conventional printed or painted dial. Arita references span white glazed, unglazed, and cobalt-blue treatments, with molded patterns that interact with the color. For the 2026 cobalt-blue dial, Seiko says it refined the glaze so the underlying pattern would be neither too pronounced nor obscured; the release names Hashiguchi and kiln team leader Toshiaki Kawaguchi as contributors to that development (Seiko Watch Corporation, May 14, 2026).

Handwork and firing can also leave small dimples, tiny dots, and uneven color. Seiko warns of these characteristics on its product pages and says no two genuine Arita dials are exactly alike. That makes subtle variation part of the material’s character, but it does not establish that every mark on a watch offered for sale is normal or authentic: assess a specific watch and its condition on its own merits.
How the current references compare
The official specifications show why “Arita dial” alone is not enough to choose a watch. Case dimensions, water resistance, dial finish, and movement functions differ by reference.

Fit and wearing format
The HCC007 is the smallest by published diameter, at 39.6 mm, but is also the thickest of these three at 12.8 mm. The SPB445 and SPB497 are 40.6 mm across and 12.5 mm thick. Those measurements help narrow a choice, but they cannot predict how a case will sit on an individual wrist. The bracelet on the SPB445 and leather straps on the HCC007 and SPB497 also create different wearing experiences; try the exact reference if possible.
Movement features and water resistance
All three use automatic movements with an approximately 72-hour power reserve, according to their product pages. The 6R5H in the SPB445 is specified with a 24-hour hand, while the 6R51 models in the HCC007 and SPB497 are simpler in function. Water resistance is a more substantial distinction: Seiko lists 3 bar for the HCC007 and 10 bar for the other two. Do not assume one Arita model’s rating applies to the entire line; use the rating of the precise reference and follow Seiko’s guidance for its intended use.

Seiko’s May 14, 2026 press release gives conflicting details. Its opening says the HCC007 is limited to 1,500 pieces and available from July 2026. Later, it again says 1,500 pieces, but an adjacent description says 2,500 pieces available from June 2026. The official product page confirms the model and its specifications but does not settle the discrepancy. Treat the quantity and launch timing as unconfirmed unless Seiko or an official regional source clarifies them.
Is the Arita Presage concept new?
No. Seiko introduced the Arita Presage concept in a March 21, 2019 release with the SPB093 and SPB095. Those launch models used different calibers and were specified at 45 and 70 hours of power reserve respectively, with dual-curved sapphire and 10 bar water resistance. These are historical launch specifications, not evidence of current stock or present-day availability (Seiko’s March 21, 2019 announcement).
Who should consider one?
An Arita Presage makes the most sense for someone who values a distinctive ceramic dial and accepts that a handmade surface may not be perfectly uniform. Choose by reference rather than by the shared craft label: the HCC007 trades the higher water-resistance rating of the SPB445 and SPB497 for a smaller diameter and cobalt-blue dial, while the SPB445 pairs a bracelet with a 24-hour hand and the SPB497 offers an unglazed dial on leather. Seiko’s published specifications establish those differences; they do not establish long-term owner experience, comparative accuracy, or independent durability results.
