A GMT hand completes one rotation every 24 hours and is read against a 24-hour scale. The regular hour and minute hands usually show local time; the GMT hand shows a reference time. Rotating a 24-hour bezel shifts the scale relative to the GMT hand, letting you read another time-zone offset without changing the hand. Some watches can display local time and two other zones, but only when their markings and movement support that setup.
What the GMT hand and bezel each do
The GMT hand shows a 24-hour cycle
Unlike the ordinary hour hand, which makes two turns in a day, the GMT hand makes one. Read it against 24-hour markings to distinguish morning from evening: for example, 06 indicates 6 a.m. and 18 indicates 6 p.m. in the reference zone. On documented TUDOR and Hamilton examples, the regular hour and minute hands show local time while the GMT hand indicates reference time. TUDOR’s GMT tutorial and the Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba GMT manual describe those roles.

The bezel shifts the scale
A rotating 24-hour bezel carries hour markings around the dial. In its neutral position, it can provide the scale for reading the GMT hand’s reference-zone time. Turning it shifts the markings relative to the hand, so the same hand position can indicate a different time-zone offset. Rolex describes the GMT-Master II’s 24-hour hand as indicating a second zone on its graduated rotatable bezel; the exact bezel operation depends on the watch. - Read local time from the regular hour and minute hands, if your model assigns them that role.
- Read reference time by following the GMT hand to the 24-hour scale in its neutral position. Confirm which scale and reference zone your watch uses.
- For another zone, rotate the bezel by the difference between the reference zone and the target zone, then read the GMT hand against the shifted scale. Check whether the target is ahead or behind and whether the calculation crosses midnight.
For example, if your reference zone is UTC and your target is UTC+3, the target is three hours ahead. Shift the bezel according to the direction and method specified for your watch, then read the GMT hand against the bezel. This is an illustration of the offset logic, not a universal setting instruction: bezel direction, zero position, and operating sequence vary by model.

Can one watch show three time zones?
Yes, if the watch has the appropriate fixed 24-hour reference markings as well as a rotatable 24-hour bezel. The regular hands can show local time, the fixed scale can show one reference zone, and the bezel can be turned to read another zone from the GMT hand. TUDOR describes this capability for its documented configuration, and Grand Seiko explains using its 24-hour indicators on a bi-directional bezel to read an additional zone. Not every watch marketed as a GMT has this combination. TUDOR’s tutorial and Grand Seiko’s instructions for Cal. 9S86 and 9S66 show model-specific examples.
Why the setting procedure differs by watch
Do not assume all rotating-bezel GMT watches work alike. For example, Citizen’s caliber 9054 instructions say to set the bezel with “24” at the top on the rotating-bezel models covered by that manual. Grand Seiko gives its own method for reading an additional zone, while Hamilton’s manual describes setting reference time with the GMT and minute hands and reading against the 24-hour bezel display. These directions apply to the named configurations, not to every GMT watch. Citizen’s 9054 manual, Grand Seiko’s instructions, and Hamilton’s manual provide the details for their respective models.

Account for changing civil-time offsets
Time-zone differences are not always fixed year-round: daylight-saving changes can alter the civil-time offset between locations. Check the current offset for both places before turning the bezel, and account for any change of date. Grand Seiko’s example distinguishes the Paris-to-Japan difference when daylight saving is observed. Orient offers a calculation in its guide—subtract the current location’s time difference from the secondary location’s, and add 24 hours if the result is negative—but this is guidance for the method described there, not a universal bezel-direction rule. - Whether the bezel is 24-hour, how it rotates, and whether it has specified positions.
- Whether the watch has a fixed 24-hour reference scale for a third time zone.
- Which hand or hands can be adjusted independently, and the manufacturer’s setting sequence.
These details determine how to set and read your watch safely and accurately; use the instructions for its exact model and movement.
