There is no universal setting sequence for quartz GMT watches. Find the caliber number on the case back and follow the manufacturer’s manual for that exact movement before pulling the crown or pressing any buttons. Crown positions, button functions, GMT displays, and date-setting restrictions vary by caliber.
For example, Seiko’s Cal. 5T82 manual covers a city hand and two small world-time hands—not the single central GMT hand found on many other watches. Use its steps only if your watch has that movement.

Identify your watch’s GMT display and caliber first
Look for a caliber or movement code on the case back, then find the corresponding instructions through the watchmaker’s support site. Seiko’s instruction-manual lookup, for instance, directs owners to select the caliber code that matches their watch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore setting anything, establish what the display shows. A central 24-hour GMT hand may indicate a second time zone, while a world-time watch may use a city hand and separate subdial hands. Also check whether changing the main hour hand moves the date and whether the manual specifies a restricted date-setting window. These details determine the correct procedure.
#1 Best Overall
- Quartz GMT Movement - When used in conjunction with the black and blue rotating bezel, the two-blue and white triangle GMT hand can be used to track a second time zone.
- Stainless-steel - The stainless-steel case and bracelet are resistant to corrosion, rust, and daily wear and tear.
- Date Window - Easily track the date in a dedicated window beside 3 o'clock.
- Enhanced Visibility - Luminant hands ensure readability in low-light conditions.
Seiko Cal. 5T82: a quartz world-time example
The following procedure is for the Seiko Cal. 5T82 analogue quartz movement only. Its controls and hand layout may not match your watch. Refer to the 5T82 instruction manual if your case or button layout differs.
Set the main time
- Wait until the small seconds hand reaches 12, then pull the crown to the second click.
- Turn the crown to set the main hour and minute hands. Check AM/PM: the date advances once every 24 hours, so a date change at noon indicates the time is set 12 hours off.
- The manual advises moving the minute hand a few minutes ahead, then turning it back to the exact minute.
Set the city and world-time hands
- Keep the crown at the second click.
- Hold button A for two seconds to enter city-hand adjustment, then use the relevant button to select the city, following the manual’s button diagram.
- Hold button A again and use button B to set the world-time hour and minute hands to that city’s time.
- Check the selected city against the 24-hour indication. The manual directs owners to adjust these hands in sequence with the crown at the second click.
Set the date last
- After setting the main time, pull the crown to the first click.
- Turn the crown clockwise until the desired date appears, then push the crown in.
- Do not adjust the date between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. For a 30-day month or February, correct the date manually afterward.
Seiko’s instruction is explicit: “Before setting the date, be sure to set the main time.” Once set, check that the date changes at midnight and that the city/world-time display matches the intended reference time.

“GMT watch” describes a display or function, not a single movement design. A useful way to compare procedures is to check the exact caliber, which crown position changes the main time or date, how the GMT indication is displayed, whether the date follows the hour hand, and whether date adjustment is restricted at certain hours.
Do not borrow instructions from a watch simply because it also has a GMT hand. Citizen’s Cal. 9054, for example, is an automatic GMT movement with a different crown sequence; its instructions are not a substitute for a quartz movement’s manual. Tissot’s customer-service manual index lists the TISSOT SEASTAR 1000 GMT Quartz 40mm, but that listing does not establish that its controls work like the Seiko 5T82.

If the GMT hand or date does not behave as expected
- Recheck the caliber code and make sure the manual matches it; do not infer button functions from another model.
- Confirm the main time’s AM/PM setting and observe a full date rollover to distinguish midnight from noon.
- For the 5T82, follow the specified order and avoid date adjustment from 9 p.m. through 1 a.m. For another caliber, use its own stated restriction, if any.
- If the crown, date mechanism, or hand alignment does not respond as the model manual describes, stop forcing the control and contact a watchmaker or the manufacturer’s authorized service channel.
