A chronograph is a watch with a stopwatch function in addition to its ordinary time display. On many two-pusher models, the upper button starts and stops timing, while the lower button resets the stopped chronograph. Small registers often show elapsed minutes or hours, but their layout varies by watch—check the dial markings or model manual before assuming what a hand measures.
Which hand is the chronograph hand?
First separate the watch’s ordinary timekeeping display from its stopwatch display. On many chronographs, the long central seconds hand belongs to the chronograph and stays still until timing begins. The continuously moving seconds hand may instead be in a small register. Other layouts differ, so position alone is not a reliable guide: look for labels, the manufacturer’s dial diagram, or the manual for your specific model.

When the chronograph is running, its central hand typically records elapsed seconds. Smaller registers, often called subdials or totalizers, may count elapsed minutes or hours as that hand completes cycles. A three-register layout may show elapsed seconds, minutes, and hours, but some watches have two registers, ordinary running seconds, or other indicators. The number and position of subdials do not establish their function by themselves.

How to use a conventional two-pusher chronograph
On many familiar two-pusher watches, the upper pusher is near 2 o’clock and the lower pusher near 4 o’clock. That is a common arrangement, not a universal rule; confirm the controls for your model.

- Start: Press the start/stop pusher once. The chronograph hand begins measuring elapsed time.
- Stop: Press the same pusher again. The chronograph hands hold the measured reading.
- Read: Read the central chronograph hand together with the elapsed-time registers. Use the dial’s markings to interpret each register.
- Reset: Once timing has stopped, press the reset pusher to return the chronograph indications to zero.
Do not assume that pressing reset during a run is safe. Some models support particular mid-run operations and others do not. Shinola, for example, distinguishes between its quartz chronographs’ accumulated-timing behavior and a cited automatic model that does not support the same reset-pusher behavior during a run. Follow the instructions for your watch rather than applying one model’s sequence to another.
How chronograph designs change the controls
Monopusher chronographs
A monopusher combines chronograph controls in one pusher. Its exact start, stop, and reset sequence depends on the design, so use the model’s instructions rather than expecting separate upper and lower buttons.

Flyback chronographs
A flyback function lets the wearer press a designated pusher while timing to reset the hand and immediately begin a new measurement. Patek Philippe describes this as a way to avoid a separate stop step. It is a special feature, not standard operation for every chronograph.

Some chronographs can time separate intervals while preserving the total elapsed time; others have different rules for stopping, restarting, and resetting. Check the manual for the specific movement before using an intermediate control during a run.

What chronograph labels do—and do not—tell you
“Chronograph” describes the added elapsed-time function; it does not say whether the watch is automatic, hand-wound, or quartz. Those are separate characteristics of the watch and its movement. Nor does the chronograph label guarantee one particular register layout or control sequence.
A tachymeter is an optional scale printed on a dial or bezel, not a subdial and not a feature of every chronograph. It can convert elapsed time over a known distance into a rate, often speed. For example, if the scale is calibrated in kilometres per hour, time a one-kilometre interval and read the scale at the chronograph seconds hand when you reach the next marker. The result depends on the distance, scale units, and watch calibration; use the markings and instructions for that watch.
When to check the manual or seek service
- Unsure what a subdial measures: Check the dial labels or the manufacturer’s diagram and model manual; do not infer its job just from its position.
- Unsure whether reset is safe during timing: Stop and consult the model’s instructions before pressing the reset control.
- Using pushers near or underwater: Do not operate them underwater unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it for your model. Swatch’s technical guidance, for example, says not to manipulate its watches’ crowns or pushers underwater; that instruction should not be generalized to every brand.
- Chronograph will not return to zero: Consult the model’s manual or an authorized service channel. There is no universal calibration or repair procedure established for all chronographs.
