Before buying a second-hand watch, inspect its visible components, ask for specific service records, and test only its basic functions without opening the case. Treat authenticity, originality, mechanical condition, and water resistance as separate questions. For a costly, vintage, complicated, or uncertain watch, make a qualified watchmaker’s inspection a condition of the sale.
Start with the watch the seller says it is
Ask for the brand, model or reference, and a clear set of photographs: dial, case front and sides, lugs, crown, clasp, and bracelet or strap. Compare the stated model and visible configuration with reliable information for that model. A serial or reference number alone does not prove that the watch—or every component on it—is authentic.

For a listing, look for consistent, well-lit images rather than relying on a single attractive front-on shot. If a detail is obscured or omitted, ask the seller to photograph it before you commit.

Inspect the exterior component by component
Look closely at the case, edges, lugs, bezel, crystal, dial, hands, crown, clasp, and bracelet or strap. A 10x watchmaker’s loupe can help you see small visible details, but it cannot authenticate a watch or diagnose its movement.

- Be Willing to Share: you can share these jewelry magnifier glasses with your friends who love to experiment, elders who collect jewelry and antiques, and friends who collect coins, so that their work or hobby can get good support and progress
- Case and bezel: Note dents, corrosion, uneven wear, and signs of polishing or refinishing. On a watch whose shape and edges matter to its character, compare the visible geometry with reliable images of the model.
- Crystal, dial, and hands: Look for cracks, moisture signs, damage, or components that seem inconsistent with the claimed model. Ask whether any part has been replaced or restored.
- Crown, clasp, and bracelet: Check for visible damage, looseness, or missing or worn components. Ask whether spare links or an alternative strap are included if that matters to fit or value.
Authenticity and originality are not interchangeable: a watch may be authentic but have replacement or restored parts. Ask the seller to disclose known interventions rather than assuming every component is original. For broader guidance on visible condition and originality, see Watch Safe’s used-watch checklist and Mostra’s guide to pre-owned watch condition.
Ask for useful service records
Request dated receipts or service reports, and ask what work was done, which parts were replaced, whether the case was opened, and whether the watch was refinished. A dated invoice or watchmaker’s report is more informative than an unsupported statement that the watch was “recently serviced.”
Records help you understand maintenance history and possible upcoming costs; they do not establish the watch’s present mechanical condition. Boxes, papers, and serial-matching documentation can support a listing’s history, but none substitutes for an inspection suited to the purchase risk.

Check basic functions without opening the case
If appropriate for the model, operate the controls gently and stop if anything feels stuck or abnormal. These are preliminary observations, not a movement diagnosis.
- Wind the crown if the watch is designed for manual winding, and notice whether it turns smoothly.
- Set the time and observe whether the hands move as expected.
- If the watch has a date, observe its changeover without forcing the hands or crown.
- If it has a chronograph, check whether the pushers start, stop, and reset the display.
A watch that runs is not thereby proven mechanically sound or accurate. A watchmaker can assess operation and timing against the maker’s specifications; there is no single timekeeping tolerance that applies to every age, model, and movement.
Assume water resistance is unverified until tested
Do not infer current water resistance from a model’s original rating, a clean exterior, or a seller’s use of the word “waterproof.” Seals can deteriorate. Ask for a recent pressure or water-resistance test record, and do not expose the watch to water unless its resistance has been appropriately verified.

Panerai’s service information says water resistance should be checked periodically and describes testing as part of service. The Phillips auction buyer guide also does not guarantee a watch’s current water resistance. A seller’s description is not a substitute for a suitable test.
Leave internal inspection to a professional
Do not remove the case back yourself. Opening a watch can require specialist tools and may affect its seals. Patek Philippe’s authenticity guidance says case-back removal to view internal numbers should be done only by an Authorized Retailer or Authorized Service Center. If you need to assess the movement, request an inspection or clear movement photographs from a trusted qualified professional.

Listings and auction condition descriptions may not cover every defect or replaced component. Compare the seller’s price and protections with the likely cost of inspection and any maintenance it identifies. The Rolex Certified Pre-Owned programme is one specific example of a brand-backed route: Rolex says eligible watches sold through participating Official Retailers return to Rolex workshops for verification of original configuration, are serviced and tested, and receive a two-year international guarantee. This applies to that programme, not second-hand watches generally; participating retailer availability should be checked when buying. Rolex also says only Rolex can confirm a Rolex watch’s authenticity.
Compare candidates on the same decision points
There is no universal score for second-hand condition. Compare the watches you are considering across the same practical questions:
- How well preserved are the visible components and case geometry?
- What is original, replaced, or restored—and has the seller disclosed it?
- How specific and recent are the service records, and what maintenance may be due?
- Do basic functions work, and is there professional timing information?
- Is there current water-resistance evidence if you need it?
- What protections does the seller offer, and what is the likely total cost after inspection or service?
A watch-forum buyer asked what to check first in listing photos and descriptions; replies mentioned service or repair history, receipts, serial-matching paperwork, and spare links or straps. That discussion is an example of buyer concerns, not a representative survey. See the discussion.
