Stahl’s April 25, 2021 account describes a well-worn watch kept in a drawer, an owner-supplied provenance letter, and a dial revealed after he replaced the crystal. It is a compelling account of one watch—not independent proof of authenticity, a complete ownership record, or a current appraisal.
How the watch came to Stahl’s attention
In his April 25, 2021 Rolex Passion Report, collector Philipp Stahl says the story began when a question about a friend’s Rolex 6538 OCC appeared on the Vintage Rolex Forum. The son of the watch’s original owner then contacted Stahl about his father’s watch, which had been kept in a drawer.

Stahl recounts meeting the owner and his two sons in Arizona. According to the post, the owner gave him a provenance letter and permitted him to share it. The account therefore centers on a family’s history of the watch and a letter described by Stahl; the accessible article text does not reproduce the letter in full.
What Stahl reported about this 6538
Stahl identifies the watch as a Rolex Submariner Big Crown, reference 6538, and describes it as a four-line example delivered in 1958. These are the article’s claims about this individual watch. The report does not independently establish its serial number, factory configuration, or authenticity.

Wear, bracelet, and crystal
Stahl characterizes the watch as heavily worn after years of daily use. He says its bracelet remained intact but had stretched, and that the crystal had been on the watch for 56 years. Those details are observations reported in 2021, not a present-day condition assessment.
The dial beneath the crystal
Stahl says that after he changed the crystal, a glossy, fully gilt four-line dial was visible. The detail is part of his account of examining this watch; it should not be treated as independent confirmation that the dial or other components are original to the watch.

The owner’s account of diving
Stahl recounts the owner saying he rinsed the watch with water after diving. That recollection describes the owner’s past practice, not a test of the watch’s water resistance. It does not show that an unserviced 1950s watch is safe to wear in water today.
What the provenance story establishes—and what it does not
The report offers a specific narrative: the owner’s son contacted Stahl, Stahl met the family, and the owner supplied a letter that he was allowed to share. This is meaningful provenance context as recounted by the author, but it is not the same as a verified, complete chain of title. The post does not establish independent authentication, Rolex certification, the full contents of the letter, the watch’s current condition, or its present value.

For readers evaluating a vintage watch, keep these questions distinct: who owned it, whether its components and configuration are original, what work or service it has received, what condition it is in now, and whether a qualified independent examination supports the claims. Stahl’s account addresses parts of the first-hand family story and his reported observations; it does not settle all of those questions.

The appeal lies in the combination of a recognizable reference, a family-held watch, and a report of long use before the watch resurfaced. The narrative is unusually personal, but its limits matter: it is a collector’s published account from 2021, based in part on the owner’s recollections, rather than factory records or a current technical examination. Read it as the story of one reported Rolex 6538—not as a general guide to every Big Crown Submariner or a basis for estimating market value.
