For a Seiko 5 Sports model with the 4R36 movement, Seiko lists a factory-adjusted rate of +45 to −35 seconds per day under specified conditions. That is a manufacturer’s movement specification, not a promise of how any individual watch will run. Seiko does not set a universal owner-facing threshold for regulation: measure the watch consistently for about a week, check the conditions that affect its rate, and seek professional advice if its persistent error is unacceptable or its behavior changes suddenly.
What the accuracy specification means
Seiko’s instructions for the 4R35 and 4R36 movements give a factory-adjusted daily-rate range of +45 to −35 seconds under the stated normal-temperature and wearing conditions. The specified temperature range is 5°C to 35°C, and Seiko cautions that actual performance can fall outside the range depending on wear duration, arm movement, temperature, and how fully the mainspring is wound. Seiko’s 4R35/4R36 instructions describe the figure as factory-adjusted accuracy.

This is a movement-level specification, not a guarantee that every Seiko 5 Sports watch has the same movement or will keep identical time. Check the reference number and documentation for your own watch. For example, Seiko’s US product page identifies the SRPK99 as a Seiko 5 Sports model using 4R36; it lists automatic and manual winding, approximately 41 hours of power reserve, and 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance. Those details apply to that model, not automatically to every 5 Sports watch. Seiko SRPK99 product specifications.

A mechanical movement’s driving force changes as its mainspring unwinds. Seiko identifies winding state, time worn, arm motion, temperature, and off-wrist position as factors that influence the rate. A watch’s measured result therefore reflects not only its adjustment but also how it was worn and stored.

How to measure its rate before deciding
One day’s result is not enough to characterize a mechanical watch. Seiko says to assess daily rates over about a week rather than judge by a single day. Use a reliable time reference, take readings at consistent times, and record whether the watch is gaining or losing time.
- Start with a consistent reference. Set or compare the watch against a reliable time source, then note the date, time, and offset in seconds.
- Repeat at the same time each day for about a week. Keep the watch’s usual routine as consistent as practical; record hours worn and any winding.
- Note unusual conditions. Record long periods off the wrist, temperature extremes, a strong impact or vibration, or close exposure to a magnetic object.
- Look for a repeated pattern. A stable daily gain or loss is more informative than one outlier. Decide whether that ongoing rate works for your needs.
The log is a practical way to apply Seiko’s week-scale assessment guidance; it is not a manufacturer-prescribed test protocol. Seiko’s instructions also caution that the observed rate may vary with actual use.

Checks to make before asking for regulation
Winding and wearing time
A low mainspring state can make the rate less stable. Seiko recommends regular winding, even for a self-winding watch, and says wearing it more than eight hours a day can help maintain a full wind and stable performance. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee or a requirement for every owner. See Seiko’s mechanical-watch accuracy FAQ.

Temperature
The 4R movement specification is stated for 5°C to 35°C. Seiko notes that mechanical watches tend to lose time at high temperatures and gain time at low temperatures, so consider whether unusually hot or cold conditions coincided with the readings.

Resting position overnight
Seiko says an off-wrist position can affect a mechanical watch’s rate. Its FAQ suggests comparing face-up, back-up, or side positions for 7 to 8 hours. This can help you identify a position that reduces overnight drift; it does not repair or regulate the movement.
Magnetic exposure
A watch can remain magnetized after it is removed from a magnetic source, and Seiko says magnetism can cause it to gain or lose time. If a rate change followed likely magnetic exposure, ask an authorized service center about demagnetization rather than trying to open or adjust the watch. Seiko’s general-information FAQ covers magnetism and mechanical watches.

Shock, vibration, and service history
Seiko’s 4R troubleshooting guidance identifies a drop, a hard impact, active sports, or strong vibration as possible causes of a changed rate. If the watch’s timekeeping does not recover after resetting, consult the retailer. Seiko also recommends service-center examination, cleaning, and oiling once every three years; its troubleshooting guidance advises consulting the retailer if the watch has not been overhauled for more than three years.
When regulation makes sense—and when it may not
Consider discussing regulation with a retailer or service center when a week of reasonably consistent observations shows a persistent rate you cannot accept, even after you have considered winding, wear, temperature, and resting position. The acceptable rate is an owner decision: Seiko’s cited materials do not prescribe a specific number of seconds per day at which every 4R36 should be regulated.

Regulation is not a substitute for diagnosing another problem. A sudden change, a change after a drop or hard impact, suspected magnetism, or overdue maintenance is a reason to seek professional evaluation. If the watch is magnetized, Seiko’s guidance points to service demagnetization; if the service interval has passed, ask about examination and maintenance rather than treating adjustment alone as the solution. Avoid opening the case or attempting an internal adjustment unless you have the relevant watchmaking expertise.
