How Ceramic Watch Cases Are Made and How to Care for Them

High-tech ceramic watch cases are pressed from engineered powder, sintered into dense solids, then machined and polished. They resist scratches well but can still chip or break from a hard impact.

A high-tech ceramic watch case begins as a fine engineered powder, usually based on zirconium oxide. It is shaped in a mold, heated until its particles fuse into a dense solid, then machined and polished. That sequence gives the case its hardness and its resistance to everyday scratches. It does not make the case impact-proof. A strong knock, or a fall onto a hard floor, can still chip or break it, so the practical care rule is gentle handling, plus checking the watch’s own manual before any cleaning or water exposure.

What ceramic watch cases are made from

There is no single ceramic recipe. Rado says its High-Tech Ceramic starts with zirconium oxide powder, with pigments added for color. IWC discusses zirconium oxide as well and, for one brown model, a combination of silicon nitride and titanium nitride. CHANEL describes selecting mineral powders and using a measured formula for its signature ceramic colors. The word “ceramic” therefore names a family of engineered materials. Hardness, weight and color depend on the formula, so a property reported for one brand’s material should not be assumed for another’s.

The production sequence

Most high-tech ceramic cases pass through the same broad stages: preparing the feedstock, molding, removing the binder, sintering, machining and polishing. Makers name and divide these stages differently, and the equipment and settings vary from one manufacturer to the next.

1. Preparing the feedstock

Rado combines its zirconium oxide powder and pigments with a polymer binder. The mixture becomes a feedstock that can flow into a mold. The binder is temporary. It exists only to make the powder moldable and is removed later in the process.

2. Molding the rough component

Molding gives the material its preliminary case shape. Rado describes injecting melted feedstock into a precision mold at 1,000 bar. CHANEL describes placing raw material into a mold and applying heat and pressure to form the basic shape. The two descriptions show different methods. Neither is an industry-wide standard, and the molded piece is a rough form, not a finished case.

3. Removing the binder

Debinding removes the binding agent before the part is densified. CHANEL describes this step as eliminating the binder that allowed the powder to be injected. Rado lists debinding as a distinct production stage.

4. Sintering and shrinkage

Sintering heats the formed body until the ceramic particles fuse into a dense material. Rado states that its components are sintered at 1,450°C and shrink by 25% in the process. IWC describes its ceramic cases shrinking by about one-third during sintering. Because the part gets smaller by a large proportion, the mold and the target dimensions have to be calculated with that loss already included. The figures are maker-specific. Formex, in its general educational overview of case materials, describes the same sintering and shrinkage stages but does not set a universal percentage, and its generalized figures should be read as context rather than specifications.

5. Machining to the final form

After sintering, the hard material is refined to its final dimensions and silhouette. CHANEL describes mechanical refinement at this stage. Rado lists diamond-tool machining. Because the sintered ceramic is very hard, ordinary cutting tools are not an option, and tolerances depend on this controlled, factory-based machining.

6. Polishing the surface

Rado lists precision polishing as a production stage, and CHANEL identifies polishing as the final step in its own process. The polished surface is the one the owner sees and handles. Reproducing this finish requires industrial equipment and abrasives matched to the material, so it is not a home procedure.

Manufacturer figures at a glance

The table below lists the numbers each maker publishes. The Rado and IWC figures are brand claims for their own materials and processes. The manufacturer pages reviewed carry no publication date, so none of these numbers should be read as independently measured, universal ceramic values.

Hardness is not impact resistance

Hardness and impact resistance are separate properties. Hardness describes how well a surface resists scratching and abrasion from everyday contact with keys, desks and cuffs. Rado characterizes its High-Tech Ceramic as highly resistant to everyday scratches, which is not the same as being immune to damage. Impact describes what happens when a concentrated blow lands on the case. Citizen’s official care guidance says that ceramic has hardness and corrosion resistance suitable for ordinary watch use, but that a strong shock, such as striking a hard object or dropping the watch onto a hard floor, can break or chip it.

A ceramic case can therefore look unmarked after years of wear and still be damaged by one hard knock. IWC’s Head of Innovation and Predevelopment, Lorenz Brunner, describes ceramic materials as “lighter and harder than steel, but at the same time extremely resistant to physical and chemical influences.” That is a description of the material class. It is not a guarantee that any given ceramic watch will survive a fall.

Caring for a ceramic watch

  • Avoid striking the case against hard objects, including door frames, countertops and tool surfaces.
  • Do not drop the watch onto a hard floor. When setting it down, use a soft surface.
  • After any knock, inspect the case edges and the bezel for small chips. Chips can be easy to miss.
  • Avoid abrasive polishing products and home repair attempts, which the reviewed care guidance does not support.

What the care guidance does not establish

Citizen’s official care guidance supports careful handling and avoiding hard impacts. It does not give step-by-step cleaning instructions, name a safe cleaning solution, or establish that water exposure is safe for every ceramic watch. Cleaning and water rules depend on the specific model, its seals and its water-resistance rating. Read the watch’s manual before washing it or wearing it in water, and follow that document rather than a general rule.

How ceramic compares with other case materials

When comparing ceramic with steel, titanium or other materials, the following axes are the useful ones. Results depend on the specific formulation and on how the watch is built, so the points below describe the material type in general terms.

  • Everyday surface wear: Rado characterizes its material as highly resistant to everyday scratches. This is the property ceramic is most often chosen for.
  • Impact vulnerability: Citizen specifically cautions that ceramic can chip or break after a strong impact. This is where ceramic is weakest, and it should be weighed before choosing it for an active lifestyle.
  • Weight and feel: Rado describes its high-tech ceramic as lightweight and smooth to the touch. IWC’s Brunner describes ceramic as lighter than steel. Numeric weight comparisons depend on the case design and should not be applied to every ceramic composition.
  • Manufacturing complexity: Shrinkage, post-sintering machining and finishing all require controlled production. Rado and IWC give brand-specific examples of this complexity, which is one reason ceramic cases are usually made by specialist manufacturers.

Frequently asked, answered in the body

Questions about impact, cleaning and water all depend on the specific watch, so check the manual that came with it before deciding how to clean or wear it.
