The two words answer different questions. “Tourbillon” names the regulating mechanism. “Skeleton” describes how the movement is presented. A watch can have either feature without the other, but when they are combined you can watch a mechanism that was originally designed to counter a specific timekeeping problem.
How a tourbillon works
A mechanical watch runs on stored energy. The energy path is the same in most movements, including tourbillon movements:
- Mainspring: a coiled spring stores energy when the watch is wound, either by hand or by the automatic winding system.
- Gear train: the stored energy passes through a series of wheels that drive the hands and the escapement.
- Escapement: the escapement releases that energy in small, controlled increments.
- Balance and hairspring: the balance wheel oscillates back and forth, and the hairspring returns it, setting the rhythm that governs the rate of the watch.
In a tourbillon, the escapement and the balance assembly are not fixed to the plate like they are in a conventional movement. They sit inside a cage that turns on its own axis. Breguet’s official tourbillon page puts the principle this way: “The principle of the tourbillon consists in placing the escapement and the balance wheel in a mobile cage.” (Montres Breguet, official tourbillon page)
Why the cage turns
Because the cage keeps rotating, the regulating assembly does not stay in one orientation relative to gravity. The original purpose was to average out rate differences that arise when gravity acts on a balance held in one fixed position for long periods, which was the typical situation for a pocket watch carried upright. Over a full cycle of the cage, the rate errors from different positions tend to cancel rather than accumulate in one direction. This addresses positional variation specifically. Gravity is not the only factor that affects a watch’s timekeeping, and the cage does not remove the others.

How fast the cage turns
The Fondation Haute Horlogerie describes the cage as generally turning once per minute in its technical encyclopedia entry on tourbillon complications. Audemars Piguet describes the same conventional arrangement in its explanation of the tourbillon:
“The operating principle has not fundamentally changed since that time: the elements that distribute the energy (escapement wheel and anchor) as well as the regulating system (balance wheel and the ‘Breguet curb’ balance spring) are united inside a rotating cage that turns around its axis at a rate of one revolution per minute.” (Audemars Piguet, “Ever Greater Precision”)

- This tourbillon designed by Swiss designer Etienne Ruffieux with modern architectural aesthetics, features a lightweight, comfortable, free-sprung balance flying tourbillon. It houses an independently developed architectural tourbillon movement adorned with oversized ruby bearings. The design aesthetic is expressed through the interplay of light and shadow created by its extreme skeletonization. The watch has been honored with the IAI Global Design Award for its outstanding original design.
- Independently developed CAL9001 free-sprung balance flying tourbillon movement, manual winding, 28,880 vibrations per hour, 25 ruby bearings. Features high-end finishing including satin brushing and beveled edges, engraved brand logo with gold-stamped. Dual mainspring series technology delivers 80-hour power reserve (twice that of standard tourbillon movements). This technology ensures more uniform and gradual mainspring release, resulting in enhanced timekeeping precision and stability.
- The CAL9001 tourbillon movement features the exclusive free-sprung micro-adjustment technology typically reserved for luxury timepieces. This free-sprung system eliminates the need for a balance spring regulator, thereby overcoming the timing inaccuracies caused by regulator displacement in conventional mechanical movements. This ensures the watch delivers enhanced precision and stability in timekeeping.
- This tourbillon measures 40mm in diameter and just 9.7mm in thickness, weighing a mere 67 grams. Its meticulously engineered structure and radically skeletonized tourbillon movement eliminate all superfluous metal components, allowing the mechanical artistry of the free-sprung flying tourbillon to shine in its purest form. It is an exquisite, high-end tourbillon watch that is both ultra-thin and supremely comfortable.
- The watch is water-resistant to 50 meters, featuring a double-sided sapphire crystal and an Italian leather strap with hand-stitched detailing for comfortable and durable wear. We offer a three-year worldwide warranty.
One revolution per minute is the usual figure, not a rule for every design. Before you state a rotation rate for a specific watch, check the manufacturer’s documentation for that model.
What “skeleton” means
Skeletonization makes the movement’s architecture visible. The maker opens up or removes material from the parts that normally hide the movement, such as the bridges and plates, while keeping the components and supports the movement needs to function. The result is a movement you can read from the dial side and, in many cases, from the case back.

There is no single, widely agreed threshold for when a movement officially counts as skeletonized. The safest approach is to treat “skeleton” as the term a manufacturer uses for a model it describes that way. It is also different from an open-heart dial, which reveals only a portion of the movement, often a window over the balance. A skeletonized movement shows the structure across much more of the calibre.
Skeleton and tourbillon are separate choices
Many buyers assume the two features come as a package. They do not. The table below separates them.

|---|---|---|
| What does it answer? | What regulates the watch’s rate? | How is the movement presented? |
| What does it describe? | A rotating cage carrying the escapement and balance assembly | A movement whose architecture is opened up to be seen |
| Can it exist without the other? | Yes. A tourbillon can be housed in a movement that is not skeletonized. | Yes. A skeleton watch does not necessarily have a tourbillon. |
| What to verify on a named watch | That the spec or manufacturer documentation states a tourbillon | That the maker describes the movement as skeletonized, not only open-heart |
Does a tourbillon make a watch more accurate?
The tourbillon was designed to reduce one specific source of error. It was not designed to guarantee better everyday accuracy. Breguet’s official explainer states that the tourbillon regulator was patented on 26 June 1801: “On 26 June 1801, Abraham-Louis Breguet obtained the patent for his tourbillon regulator.” (Montres Breguet, official tourbillon page) That is the historical date of the idea, and it describes the problem it set out to solve.
Real-world accuracy depends on much more than the presence of a cage. It depends on the design, how precisely the movement is regulated, its condition, and how the watch is worn. The manufacturer material cited here describes the mechanism and its purpose, but it does not establish that every tourbillon outperforms every non-tourbillon watch in daily use. Independent comparative accuracy data for skeleton tourbillons specifically is not something this article can point to, so any claim of superior accuracy should come with a named source, test conditions and a date.

Worked example: Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Squelette 5395
Breguet’s product page for the Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Squelette 5395 describes an extra-flat automatic tourbillon movement that has been skeletonized, and it gives the movement thickness as 3 mm (Montres Breguet, Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Squelette 5395 product page). This is a useful illustration of both features in one movement. The 3 mm figure is a model-specific manufacturer specification. It is not a general dimension for skeleton tourbillons, and it is not an independent assessment of performance.
Checking a named model before you rely on it
- Confirm the tourbillon. Look in the manufacturer’s specification for a tourbillon or equivalent cage. Some watches show a rotating element that is a different complication, so do not infer a tourbillon from appearance alone.
- Confirm the skeletonization. Check whether the maker describes the movement as skeletonized. An open-heart dial with a tourbillon visible through a window is a different design.
- Check the cage rotation. Look for the stated rotation rate and orientation. The usual figure is one revolution per minute, but do not assume it.
- Check the dimensions. Movement thickness and case size are model-specific. Use the figures on the manufacturer’s page, with the publication date noted if it is shown.
- Check any accuracy or certification claim. Record who made the claim, under what conditions it was tested, and when it was published. A claim without those details is not a basis for comparison.
If you are shopping, the same checks apply to any retailer listing. A listing that shows a skeleton dial does not confirm a tourbillon, and it does not confirm current availability or price.
