Chanel’s influence in Swiss watchmaking rests on two connected foundations: its own watchmaking operation in La Chaux-de-Fonds and reported minority investments in independent watchmakers and specialist suppliers. The first is documented by Chanel; the second is a growing network described by industry sources. Together, they show how Chanel can build manufacturing capability and support expertise across the sector without necessarily owning or controlling every business it backs.
Chanel’s Swiss base is more than an assembly address
Chanel says its watches are manufactured at workshops in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, where nearly 300 people work. The company says those workshops handle cases, bracelets, assembly and the integration of high-tech ceramic production. The headcount is Chanel’s own figure, not an independently audited total. Chanel’s watch FAQ also says its watches use Swiss movements, combining internal development with specialist partners.

The operation has roots in G&F Châtelain, whose history dates to 1947. The manufacture says the Châtelain family transferred it in 1993 to a company with shared entrepreneurial values, and describes itself today as a branch of Chanel SARL. It recounts a progression from component finishing and case work to manufacturing complete watches. G&F Châtelain’s company history provides its account of that development.
How Chanel combines internal development with outside expertise
Chanel’s watchmaking model is not a simple choice between “in-house” and outsourced. Its FAQ says the brand’s Watch Creation Studio leads watch creation, while the La Chaux-de-Fonds operation develops some movements and works with external specialists. Chanel names ETA and Audemars Piguet’s APRP movement manufacture among its partners. Those relationships matter, but they do not mean every Chanel caliber is made internally—or that every partner is part of Chanel.

In 2016, Chanel introduced Caliber 1 for the Monsieur de Chanel. The company says design, development, reliability work and movement manufacturing took place within its Haute Horlogerie department at G&F Châtelain. That is a significant example of internal capability, not evidence that all Chanel movements follow the same model.
The brand’s watch history began with the Première collection in 1987, according to the same official FAQ. Its current structure therefore links decades of product development to a dedicated creative studio, a substantial Swiss workshop base and selected external expertise.

The reported investment network
Alongside its own operation, Chanel has built a reported portfolio of relationships with independent watchmakers and a movement supplier. Deloitte’s 2025 Swiss Watch Industry Study identifies investments in Bell & Ross, F.P. Journe, Romain Gauthier and MB&F. Vogue’s account of Chanel’s watch strategy dates investments in Romain Gauthier to 2011 and F.P. Journe to 2018; Deloitte describes Chanel’s investment in Bell & Ross as part of a longer history, but the available account does not establish a precise date for that investment.
| Business or maker | What the sources establish | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bell & Ross | Deloitte includes it among Chanel’s investments. | The cited study describes it as part of Chanel’s longer investment history; a precise date and stake are not stated. |
| Romain Gauthier | Deloitte identifies an investment; Vogue dates it to 2011. | The cited sources do not state the ownership percentage. |
| F.P. Journe | Deloitte identifies an investment; Vogue dates it to 2018. | The cited sources do not state the ownership percentage. |
| Kenissi | Industry coverage describes Chanel as holding a minority interest in the movement manufacturer. | Chanel’s FAQ confirms movement partnerships but does not state its Kenissi shareholding; the percentage is not established in these sources. |
| MB&F | Deloitte says Chanel took a 25% minority share in 2024. | The stake is reported in Deloitte’s 2025 study; a minority share does not establish operational control. |
| Ebel and Kross Manufacture | WatchPro reported in 2026 that they were part of Chanel’s investment network. | No primary deal announcements were identified in the cited reporting, so these claims remain attributed trade reporting rather than confirmed company disclosures. |

What minority investments can—and cannot—tell us
A minority investment can give a larger company a financial stake and may help provide stability, access or a channel for collaboration. Deloitte frames Chanel’s investments as support for preserving watchmaking savoir-faire. That is useful context for understanding the pattern, but the sources do not establish that every deal had the same purpose or terms.
Most importantly, a minority stake is not the same as full ownership or operational control. The cited material does not provide precise ownership percentages for most of the named makers, nor does it demonstrate that they surrendered creative or day-to-day independence. Chanel’s own manufacturing operation, its partnerships with movement specialists and its investments in other watch businesses are distinct kinds of relationships; treating them as one undifferentiated group would overstate what is known.

Why the network matters to Swiss watchmaking
Chanel’s position reaches beyond the watches carrying its name. Its La Chaux-de-Fonds workshops provide a base for design execution, component work, assembly and movement development. Its partnerships add access to specialist capabilities, while reported investments extend its financial presence among independent makers. This is influence through a mix of industrial capacity and capital, rather than evidence that Chanel directs the entire Swiss watchmaking ecosystem.

The scale of that influence cannot be measured from the available figures: the sources do not establish Chanel’s current share of Swiss watch production, watch sales or the precise total value of its investments. The more defensible conclusion is qualitative: Chanel has built a substantial Swiss manufacturing foundation and a widening, partly disclosed network whose individual ownership details vary in certainty.
