To set up Apple Watch Ultra 3, pair it with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later, then follow the Apple Watch app prompts. To move an existing watch to a new iPhone without losing Health and Activity data, make an iPhone backup first and ensure Health is included through iCloud or an encrypted computer backup.
Check compatibility and prepare your devices
Apple’s compatibility requirements for Apple Watch Ultra 3 are an iPhone 11 or later, iOS 26 or later, and watchOS 26 or later, according to its page published September 17, 2026. Your iPhone or watch may need a software update before setup can continue. Check Apple Watch and iPhone compatibility.

- Update the iPhone, turn on Bluetooth, and connect it to Wi-Fi or a mobile network.
- For a transfer, have your Apple Account password and watch passcode ready. Connect both iPhones to Wi-Fi, and charge the new iPhone and watch to at least 50 percent.
- Before moving an existing watch, update the old iPhone and watch to their latest available software and make a backup as described below.
Back up your watch before moving to a new iPhone
Apple Watch automatically backs up to its paired iPhone when the devices are near each other. Then back up that iPhone to iCloud or a computer; the iPhone backup includes Apple Watch data. Apple’s Apple Watch backup guide explains what is included and excluded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteiCloud backup
On the old iPhone, check Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Saved to iCloud > Health and make sure Health sync is on. Health and Fitness data must be stored in iCloud or included in an encrypted computer backup to be preserved.

Computer backup
Back up the old iPhone using Apple Devices, iTunes, or Finder, and enable encryption for the backup. An unencrypted computer backup does not preserve Health and Fitness data.
Choose a transfer route
| Route | What you need | Health and Activity data |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Start | The old iPhone in hand; Apple lists Quick Start as an iPhone migration option. Apple’s iPhone transfer options. | Make sure Health is syncing to iCloud, or use a backup route that preserves it. |
| iCloud backup | An available iCloud backup of the old iPhone. | Health sync must be enabled in iCloud. |
| Encrypted computer backup | A computer and an encrypted backup made with Apple Devices, iTunes, or Finder. | Encryption is required to include Health and Fitness data. |
Set up Apple Watch Ultra 3 for the first time
- Press and hold the watch’s side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Unlock the iPhone and hold it near the watch. Tap Continue when the setup prompt appears. If it does not appear, open the Apple Watch app, tap All Watches, then Add Watch.
- Center the watch face in the iPhone camera viewfinder to pair. If you cannot use the camera flow, choose Pair Apple Watch Manually.
- Choose Set Up as New Apple Watch if this is your first watch. For a replacement watch, review the available options under Apps & Data and Settings, then select the appropriate earlier watch backup or set it up as new.
- Follow the prompts for Apple Account sign-in, a passcode, wrist preference, text and health settings, and any optional cellular or Apple Pay setup. Some features on GPS + Cellular models require iCloud sign-in.
- Keep the iPhone and watch near each other during setup and background syncing. Apple’s Apple Watch setup instructions cover the pairing flow.
Move an existing Apple Watch to a new iPhone
- Set up the new iPhone from the most recent iCloud or computer backup, or use Quick Start. The paired watch data is part of the iPhone backup.
- If asked whether to use the Apple Watch, keep it unlocked and on your wrist, then continue.
- If no prompt appears, open the Apple Watch app on the new iPhone with the unlocked watch nearby and follow the prompts.
- If the iPhone instead asks you to Start Pairing, Apple’s guidance is to unpair the watch and set it up again, then restore from a backup when offered. See Pair your Apple Watch with a new iPhone.
What transfers—and what you may need to set up again
A watch backup can include app data and settings, system and notification settings, Home Screen layout, watch-face configuration, Health and Fitness history and calibration data, synced music settings, the selected photo album, and time zone. Health and Fitness preservation depends on using iCloud or an encrypted computer backup.

The expected watch backup is not listed
Update both devices and check again. If no backup exists, Apple says the watch must be set up as new. Restoring from an older backup can omit Activity, Workouts, or settings changed since that backup. Some iCloud data may take a few days to appear after restoration.
Health or Activity data is missing
Health and Activity data in iCloud can sync to devices using the same Apple Account, but Activity Sharing data is not stored in iCloud. If Health data is absent after a computer restore, verify Health sync on both iPhones. Apple says Health and Activity content cannot be recovered if the old iPhone is unavailable and no backup can be made.

Pairing is stuck on the Apple logo
For this documented stuck-pairing case, restart the watch by holding the Digital Crown and side button until it restarts, then follow the on-screen reset and pairing instructions. If pairing still fails, contact Apple Support. See Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for pairing with a new iPhone.
