The “Double 9” is a Rolex Air-King reference 116900 whose dial reportedly has a 9 where the 3 o’clock marker should be. Watch media treated the watch as a legitimate factory error, but Rolex has not publicly confirmed the incident or explained how it happened.
What is the Double 9 Air-King?
It is an Air-King reference 116900: the 40 mm, time-only Oystersteel generation produced from 2016 to 2022, according to WatchGuys. Its nickname describes the unusual dial: the 9 appears at both the 9 and 3 o’clock positions. It is not the later Air-King reference 126900, which belongs to a different generation.

Time+Tide published an account of the watch on 28 October 2020, and A Collected Man also described it as an apparent factory error. In A Collected Man’s account, the first buyer reportedly did not notice the misplaced numeral until another person pointed it out.
How could Rolex’s quality checks miss it?
The explanation offered in the coverage is visual: in Rolex’s typeface, the 3 and 9 have similar silhouettes, so the wrong numeral could blend into the dial. Time+Tide reported this quality-control discussion:

“The person assembling the dial didn’t notice it, the person assembling the case didn’t notice it, the person quality checking the watch didn’t notice it — and you can kind of see why. It blends in rather well.”
That makes the oversight plausible, but it is not a confirmed account from Rolex of this watch’s production history. Time+Tide’s summary of Watchfinder & Co.’s factory exposition describes extensive automation and inspection, clean-room assembly, pressure testing, and high-resolution imaging intended to reveal very small flaws. It also cites a Rolex manufacture description of an automated stock system with 60,000 storage compartments. Those descriptions show the breadth of the reported processes; they do not establish which specific checks this watch passed or why the error escaped them.
Is it definitely a genuine factory error?
Published watch-media accounts present the example as legitimate, but the public evidence has limits. Rolex has not issued an incident report for this watch, published a serial-number range for affected examples, or disclosed how many may exist.
Collector discussion in April 2019 included both enthusiasm and skepticism, with participants debating whether the dial was a genuine production mistake or an aftermarket stunt. Without a public Rolex account or a disclosed, independently verifiable provenance trail, that debate should not be treated as settled by the nickname or by photographs alone.
Does the error make the watch more valuable?
An unusual dial can draw collector interest. Phillips discusses error dials as a collecting and auction category and identifies the Double 9 among the better-known Rolex examples. But the available information does not establish a verified sale price, a price premium for this Air-King, or an investment return. There is also no reliable published count of surviving Double 9 watches, so rarity claims cannot be quantified from the available evidence.
For comparisons with other Rolex anomalies, such as the Daytona “APH” dial, useful questions are whether the defect is easy to see, whether it is documented across a production range, how strong the provenance is, and whether an actual auction result is known. The broader error-dial discussion does not, by itself, establish a Double 9 sale result.
How can you inspect a dial like this?
A 5.0× watchmaker’s loupe can help reveal small details in dial printing and markers. Close inspection is only a first step: a loupe cannot establish whether a dial is original, altered, or correctly matched to a particular watch. For authentication, take the watch to a qualified watchmaker or authorized specialist rather than relying on a close-up image or the presence of a second 9.
