Unusual time displays do more than replace hands with something novel: they can show hours on moving discs, spell out the time in words, or add information such as a second time zone or the time light takes to reach a planet. WatchTime’s September 17, 2026, feature titled “Seven Watches with Unusual Ways of Displaying Time” actually names eight watches. The examples below explain what each display shows—and where the novelty is in the mechanism, layout, or interaction.
What makes a time display unusual?
There is no single alternative to a conventional dial. Some watches change how the hours or minutes are read; others present extra information, hide the display until it is activated, or offer two different faces. The examples below are therefore not all competing solutions to the same problem.

How do these watches show the time?
URWERK UR-100V LS Ceramic “LightSpeed”: satellite hours plus light-travel indications
The UR-100V uses satellite pointers to indicate hours and minutes. In the “LightSpeed” variation, the display extends beyond ordinary timekeeping: it also represents how long light takes to reach planets. WatchTime reports indications of about 3.2 minutes to Mercury and 4.1 hours to Neptune. Those figures describe the watch’s displayed light-travel intervals, not a conventional second time zone.

MB&F HM11 Art Deco: a time display arranged like four rooms
Four “rooms” surround a central flying tourbillon beneath a double-domed sapphire crystal. The hands remain conventional, so the unusual feature is the watch’s architecture and winding interaction, not a replacement for hand-based time reading. Instead of winding at the crown, the wearer rotates the case; WatchTime says ten turns provide the maximum four-day power reserve. It also reports two editions of ten pieces each.
Girard-Perregaux Casquette 2.0 Titanium & Gold: digital time on demand
A button activates this quartz watch’s digital display; when it is not being used, the display stays hidden to reduce energy consumption, according to WatchTime. The 2026 article describes an 820-piece limited edition that was initially reserved for registered owners of the brand’s watches. That release condition is time-sensitive, so it should not be read as a statement of current availability.

De Bethune DB Kind of Two Jumping GMT: two faces in a reversible case
The case pivots to reveal either a modern openworked home-time face or a more classical GMT face. This is a reversible, dual-sided way to present time rather than one dial with a single novel complication. WatchTime reports that the hands on both sides rotate clockwise and that the second time zone can be adjusted independently.
HYT S1 Color Editions: hours traced by moving liquids
Two immiscible liquids move through a fine glass capillary to show the hours retrograde: the indication travels along its scale and returns to the beginning. WatchTime reports a 72-hour power reserve, 50 m water resistance, and three color versions. It describes blue as permanent and orange and DLC red as limited Millésime editions running from April 2026 through April 2027. Its approximate starting price for the color editions was $72,000; color-edition availability and price may change.

Qlocktwo W: the time spelled out in words
Instead of hands or digital numerals, the Qlocktwo W spells out the time in words. WatchTime also describes a moon-phase display, automatic brightness adjustment, a motion sensor, and a magnetic charging dock. Its 2026 article reported an approximate price of $1,300 for Black Steel and Fine Steel; current stock and retail pricing are not established here.
Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Starwheel: wandering hours
Three rotating discs carry hour numerals past an arched minute scale. As each numeral reaches the scale, the wearer can read the hour and its position against the arc gives the minutes. Audemars Piguet’s explanation says a central rotor makes one revolution every three hours and carries three aluminum discs, each with four hour numerals; the display is powered by self-winding Calibre 4310.

Audemars Piguet attributes the invention of wandering hours to 1655 and says it revived the system in 1991 as Starwheel. That date is the manufacturer’s historical account, not an uncontested origin date. Sébastian Vivas, Audemars Piguet Heritage and Museum Director, describes the company’s account this way: “Invented in 1655 thanks to a request by Pope Alexander VII, who suffered from insomnia that was exacerbated by the ticking of his clock, the wandering hours complication was rediscovered by Audemars Piguet in 1991 and combines history, technical challenges, design and poetry.” See the Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Starwheel explanation.

How to compare the different display styles
Start with what the watch actually communicates. The word display, wandering hours, fluid retrograde hours, and three-ring layout all offer distinct ways to read time. The UR-100V adds a light-travel indication; the De Bethune offers two time-display faces, including a second time zone. The Casquette changes when its display appears, while the MB&F’s distinction is primarily its form and the way it is wound.
Novelty does not establish legibility. The available descriptions explain how these mechanisms work, but do not provide comparative reading tests or wearer studies. If quick glance-reading matters to you, consider whether you can interpret the display easily in person; no comparative legibility ranking is established for these eight watches.
Prices and availability: read the figures as dated reports
