Garmin watch updates may arrive at different times for different owners: Garmin says Garmin Connect downloads released software in the background and that it may take up to a week before the watch prompts you to install. That is general guidance, not a guaranteed deadline for every watch. To find out what an update changes, use the official support page for your exact model and read the dated change log beneath its software version.
How Garmin watch updates reach your device
Garmin lists three update routes: Garmin Connect on a connected phone, Garmin Express on a computer, and Wi-Fi sync on watches that support Wi-Fi. Which routes are available depends on the model; check its manual or official support page.

Garmin Connect
Garmin says the Garmin Connect app downloads software updates automatically in the background while the watch is connected to a phone. A released update may take up to a week to download before the watch prompts you to install it. The timing does not mean every owner will receive a prompt within exactly seven days, nor does a release date promise a same-day prompt.
Garmin Express
Garmin Express is the computer-based option. It requires the watch’s USB charging cable; connector compatibility depends on the model. Use the following steps:

- Connect the watch to a computer with its USB charging cable.
- Open Garmin Express and select the watch.
- Choose Install or Install All if updates are available.
- When the watch prompts you, choose Install Now or Install Tonight. If you miss the prompt or choose the later option, Garmin’s instructions say to open Settings > System > Software Update > Update Available on the watch.
Menu names can vary by device, so use the instructions for your specific model if those labels do not match.
Wi-Fi sync
Some watches can download software through a Wi-Fi sync. Check the exact model’s manual to confirm whether it supports this route.

Why your watch may not prompt on release day
A published release date and an installation prompt are not the same event. Garmin describes background downloading through Garmin Connect as potentially taking up to a week before a prompt appears. Its guidance does not establish a precise arrival time for an individual device or the internal mechanics of how releases are distributed. Different prompt dates alone do not show that a watch is malfunctioning.

How to find what a Garmin update changes
- Identify the exact watch model and edition, if applicable. Do not use another model’s notes as a substitute.
- Open that product’s official Garmin support page and locate its software version and release date.
- Read the change-log bullets listed beneath the version. They may describe features, bug fixes, compatibility changes, stability or security work, or translations.
- Compare the listed versions with the version installed on your watch. If the watch is on an older version, review the intervening entries as potentially relevant, while checking the page for any regional or edition-specific distinctions.
A version number tells you which release is listed; the accompanying bullets explain the stated changes. Garmin’s histories can change over time, so check the current support page for your watch.
Examples of model-specific notes
Garmin’s Forerunner 255 support page listed software version 28.05, dated June 2026, with itemized fixes and improvements. Its Instinct 2 page listed version 17.21, dated August 2026, including a Race Predictor fix and general security improvements. These are examples from those model pages, not universal versions or a recommendation that every Garmin watch should show either number.

Beta updates are a separate path
Garmin describes public beta software as under development, available only for select models and not offered to every device. It is distinct from waiting for a regular released update. The Forerunner 955 Solar beta instructions describe checking for beta software through System > Software Update after enrollment, but those steps should not be assumed to apply to other models. Check the instructions for your exact watch before opting into beta software.
