If your Garmin watch is draining faster after an update, first check whether the update is still installing: Garmin says a one-time increase in battery drain during installation is expected, and drain should return to normal afterward. Garmin does not specify how long that recovery takes. If the update is complete and the drain continues, check the watch’s battery data if available, review recent settings and Connect IQ changes, then verify the software and restart the watch.
First, determine whether the update is still installing
Garmin says installing a software update can cause a one-time increase in battery drain while the watch is updating. It expects drain to return to normal after installation, but gives no specific recovery-time guarantee. See Garmin’s battery-drain guidance. If installation has finished and the unusually fast drain continues, work through the checks below rather than assuming the update itself is the cause.

Check battery information on the watch
Some Garmin models include a Battery Manager glance; it is not available on every watch. On a compatible model, it can show estimated remaining time, a drain-rate graph, battery drain and charge over the preceding 12 days, and features contributing to drain since the last charge. If it is not in the glance list, Garmin says you may be able to add it. Check the Battery Manager instructions and your model’s manual for compatibility and exact steps.

Use the information as a clue, not a diagnosis: the graph and feature list can help you spot a change in usage or settings, but they do not establish that a particular update caused the drain.

Review settings and recent usage
Battery use depends on the watch model, settings, and how you use it. Check for recent changes to:
- Screen brightness, display wake behavior, and Always On Display, if supported.
- Vibration and alerts.
- Bluetooth or ANT+ sensors, Wi-Fi, and LTE on compatible models.
- GPS activity and music playback.
- Pulse Ox and other connected features.
Feature names, availability, and menu locations vary by model, so use the manual for your exact watch. Where practical, change one setting or a small group of related settings at a time and observe the result; that makes it easier to identify a likely contributor.

Test recently added Connect IQ content
If the drain began after you installed a watch face, app, widget, or data field, remove that recent item, sync the watch, and observe whether battery life improves. Garmin’s Connect IQ battery-drain guidance recommends uninstalling an app and checking the result. If removal improves battery life, Garmin advises contacting the item’s developer. This is a targeted test; it does not mean all Connect IQ content causes battery drain.

- Check the current software. Garmin recommends using Garmin Express to check for the latest software. Follow Garmin’s instructions for your watch model.
- Power the watch off and back on. Garmin recommends power-cycling the watch if rapid drain continues; a restart can end background processes.
- Check the model’s update history. Look for release notes that mention a relevant battery or feature fix. Update histories are model-specific: for example, Garmin’s fēnix E software history lists a fix for excessive battery drain after using the phone assistant or accepting a phone call on the watch. That entry applies to the fēnix E, not Garmin watches generally.
If rapid drain remains after these checks, contact Garmin Product Support with your exact model, software version, when the problem began, and what you have already tried.

Tell rapid discharge apart from charging trouble
If the watch is also failing to charge normally, inspect the charging contacts on both the watch and cable. Garmin advises cleaning them with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab, then charging for several hours before concluding the battery is not working as intended. Follow Garmin’s charging and battery guidance. Garmin says its watches and dive computers use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that are not user-replaceable; battery replacement is not a user troubleshooting step.

Do not rely on a universal menu path or runtime estimate: check the manual and current specifications for your exact watch, and treat a release-note fix as applicable only to the model named. If contacting support, include the model and software version so Garmin can assess the relevant settings and update history.
