How Good Is the Current Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch?

The Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is compelling on paper, with a certified hand-wound movement and strong heritage. Its manual winding, water rating and reference-specific configurations matter when deciding if it suits you.

It is very good by its published specification and heritage-led execution: the current 42 mm Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch pairs a hand-wound Calibre 3861 with Master Chronometer certification, a stated 50-hour power reserve and a 5-bar water-resistance rating. Those strengths come with practical trade-offs: you must wind it, and its water rating is not that of a dedicated dive watch. Whether it is a good buy for you depends on the exact reference, how it fits, and whether its configuration and upkeep suit your priorities.

What does the current Moonwatch offer?

Omega’s manual for reference 310.32.42.50.04.001 describes a 42 mm stainless-steel Moonwatch Professional with a manually wound Calibre 3861. Its functions include hours, minutes, small seconds, a chronograph and a tachymeter scale. Omega states a 50-hour power reserve and says winding once a day is enough to keep the watch functioning properly. Omega’s manual for the reference is the useful specification source—but its details should not automatically be applied to every Moonwatch variant.

Omega announced new black-and-white-dial Moonwatch Professional versions on 13 January 2026 in stainless steel and 18K Moonshine Gold. The announcement specifies Calibre 3861, a ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal and a bracelet with Omega’s comfort-release adjustment system. The precise case material, dial, crystal, bezel and strap can differ by reference, so confirm the product number rather than relying on the Moonwatch name alone. Omega’s 2026 announcement describes those particular releases.

How strong is its movement and certification?

Master Chronometer certification is the Moonwatch’s clearest technical distinction in the published evidence. Omega describes a process of eight tests over 10 days and gives the complete-watch accuracy criterion as 0 to +5 seconds per day. In its 2025 account of the certification, Omega also describes magnetic-field exposure testing at 15,000 gauss. These are Omega’s stated test process and criteria, not a promise that every watch will keep that rate in every wearer’s conditions. Omega’s account of the certification is a company source; its cumulative figure of more than 2.5 million watches designated Co-Axial Master Chronometer is likewise company-reported, not an independent audit.

Omega calls Calibre 3861 “the most advanced evolution” of Calibre 321, which the company says NASA astronauts trusted on the Moon. That is Omega’s characterization of the movement’s lineage, rather than an independent comparative judgment. The combination of a manual-wind chronograph and a formal complete-watch certification makes the specification compelling, but the available manufacturer material does not establish independent real-world accuracy or a head-to-head performance advantage over competing chronographs.

What are the everyday trade-offs?

Manual winding

The Calibre 3861 is hand-wound, not automatic. Omega’s guidance for the cited reference is to wind it once a day. If you enjoy interacting with a mechanical watch, that can be part of its appeal; if you want a watch that keeps running without daily winding when worn regularly, it is a practical disadvantage.

Water resistance

Omega rates reference 310.32.42.50.04.001 at 5 bar, equivalent to 50 metres or 165 feet. This is the manufacturer’s rating, not evidence that the Moonwatch is a dedicated diving instrument. Consider your actual water use and follow the guidance for the exact reference rather than treating the depth equivalent as a diving recommendation.

Fit and configuration

The 42 mm case size is only one part of how a watch will wear; wrist fit and comfort need to be judged on the wrist. Omega’s 2024 white-dial launch materials describe a black aluminium tachymeter bezel and options including bracelet, leather and rubber straps. By contrast, the 2026 black-and-white releases specify a ceramic bezel and sapphire crystal. These details are reference-specific, not universal traits of every Moonwatch. Omega’s 2024 white-dial announcement sets out that model’s configuration.

Is the current Moonwatch worth buying?

On documented features, it makes a strong case for someone who specifically wants a heritage-led, manual-wind chronograph with Master Chronometer certification. The daily winding requirement and 5-bar rating are real compromises, not hidden shortcomings. The right verdict depends on the individual: try the exact reference and bracelet or strap, decide whether manual winding suits your routine, and compare its live price and ownership costs with the alternatives you are considering.

The evidence available here does not establish current transaction prices, service costs or retailer inventory, so it cannot support a definitive value-for-money verdict. Omega states that new watches carry a five-year international warranty, subject to its terms; check the applicable warranty for the specific watch and place of purchase. Omega’s 2026 product announcement and the cited manual state the warranty period.
