Jewellery consignment lets a shop or online service sell your pieces on your behalf for an agreed commission. Before handing anything over, get a signed agreement that states how the fee is calculated, who can change the price, what insurance covers, when you’ll be paid, and how unsold items are returned. The terms vary by provider, so examples below illustrate possible arrangements rather than universal rules.
How jewellery consignment works
You remain the owner while the shop or service holds and markets the jewellery under the agreement. If a piece sells, the provider deducts its commission and any agreed charges, then pays you the contractual net proceeds. The exact steps depend on the arrangement: a local boutique may begin with an in-person evaluation, while an online service may arrange shipping, inspect accepted pieces, list them and fulfil orders.

- Ask how pieces are evaluated and accepted. Contact a local shop to find out whether it wants photographs or an in-person assessment. For an online service, ask about shipping, inspection and what happens if a piece is rejected.
- Agree to the terms in writing. Record the accepted items, prices, commission calculation, deductions, discount authority, consignment period, shipping, insurance, payout conditions and arrangements for unsold jewellery. Keep a dated copy signed by both parties.
- Document the handover. Use an itemized inventory with identifying descriptions, quantities and agreed prices. Record delivery and the pieces’ condition, and keep copies of relevant records.
- Let the provider market and sell the pieces. Depending on the agreement, it may display jewellery in a boutique or list it online, communicate with buyers and arrange shipping. The contract should say who can approve markdowns and how buyer returns affect the sale.
- Receive the net proceeds. Payment follows the provider’s schedule and conditions, which may depend on completed sale, cleared buyer funds or the end of a return period.
- Retrieve anything that does not sell. Confirm the end date, any extensions or markdowns, the pickup or return deadline, and who pays return shipping.
What commission and other fees should you expect?
There is no single commission schedule established by the available provider examples. Jewelers Mutual reports ranges of 25–50% for local brick-and-mortar boutiques and 10–70% for online consignment. It cites Worthy at 10–18% and The RealReal at 30–50% as examples. These are figures reported by Jewelers Mutual, not guaranteed current offers or a market-wide rate; verify the provider’s written terms before consigning. Ask what amount the commission applies to: the asking price, the actual sale price or another defined figure. Also ask whether you must approve discounts and whether other charges apply. Possible charges to clarify include authentication, shipping, insurance, listing, withdrawal, payment processing and returns; the examples do not establish that all or any of these charges apply to every consignment.
Compare the likely net payout under each written offer, not just its headline commission percentage. Include disclosed deductions, service provided, control over price reductions, insurance responsibilities and expected payment timing in the comparison.

Who insures consigned jewellery, and who bears the risk?
Do not assume that a provider’s possession means your jewellery is insured for its full value. Get the coverage terms in writing and check:
- Which locations and transit stages are covered.
- What events are covered, and what exclusions apply.
- How the value of a loss is determined, and whether a deductible or limit applies.
- Who must report a loss and file the claim.
Jewellers Mutual’s agreement checklist recommends clarifying whether the shop provides insurance and detailing the coverage. Provider contracts illustrate why the answer must come from the agreement governing your transaction. The RealReal’s terms treat jewellery lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed while in its possession or approved transit as sold under its agreement, with payment handled through its commission schedule. The U.S. Gold Bureau agreement provides for shipping insurance and specifies when risk transfers after receipt and authentication. These are distinct provider terms, not standard conditions for all consignments. The RealReal’s terms and the U.S. Gold Bureau agreement set out those examples.

Ask your own insurer whether your policy continues to cover a piece while it is consigned or in transit. Do not assume it does; coverage depends on your policy.
When and how will you be paid?
Payment schedules differ between providers. For example, the U.S. Gold Bureau agreement says it pays for products sold during a calendar month on or before the 15th day of the following month. Hatton Jewels states that it pays by bank transfer within 21 days after sale. Those are provider-specific examples, not standard payment windows. - What event starts the payment clock: a buyer’s purchase, cleared funds, delivery or the end of a return period?
- How long can the buyer return the jewellery, and can a return or chargeback reverse or delay your payment?
- What payment method is used, and what sales statement will you receive?
- How are payment disputes and reversals handled?
The RealReal’s contract, for example, defines when an item is considered sold and addresses certain loss events under its commission schedule. Review the agreement itself for the terms that apply to your pieces.

Agreement checklist before handing over a piece
Make sure the written agreement covers each of these points:
- Names and contact details for both parties.
- A numbered inventory describing each piece and its agreed or suggested price.
- Start and end dates, display or listing arrangements, and any extension terms.
- Commission percentage, calculation base, and all additional deductions or expenses.
- Who controls price reductions and what discount requires your consent.
- Insurance coverage, valuation basis, deductible or limits, custody, transit and claims process.
- Payment trigger, schedule, method and itemized sales statement.
- Buyer return period and its effect on your payment.
- Unsold-item pickup or return deadline, shipping responsibility and any withdrawal fee.
- Signatures and a dated copy for each party.
Jewellers Mutual’s jewellery consignment guidance also highlights the importance of specifying the parties, display duration, percentage split, insurance, payout frequency and statement, unsold-item return, shipping and an itemized inventory. The agreement that you sign—not another provider’s published example—sets the terms for your transaction.
