His guilloché, hand engraving and skeletonisation now define both commissions for established brands and watches bearing his own name. His story offers a vivid way to understand Pforzheim’s craft tradition—but it is not a measure of the city’s entire watch industry.
Who is Jochen Benzinger?
Benzinger is a Pforzheim-based artisan watchmaker and finisher whose specialty is decorative work on dials and movements. Oracle Time’s 2026 profile traces his career from jewellery techniques to commissions for watchmakers and, later, his own collection. The official Benzinger Watches artisan profile also describes his work in engraving, skeletonisation and guilloché.

From jewellery school to his own workshop
According to Oracle Time, Benzinger began training at Pforzheim’s Goldsmiths’ School in 1978, learning decorative jewellery techniques. He opened his workshop in 1984 and developed a particular aptitude for guilloché. The transferable skills of working carefully into metal helped carry his practice from jewellery into horology.

The profile says that toward the end of the 1990s, Chronoswiss founder Gerd-Rüdiger Lang commissioned dials from Benzinger and included “dials by Benzinger” on the design. It also describes Benzinger providing guilloché for Fabergé objects, including flinqué work. These commissions are reported by Oracle Time; they are not independently verified here.
#1 Best Overall
Oracle Time says Benzinger launched his own collection in 2005 with the stated aim of preserving artisan crafts. In 2010, he began a project with watchmaker Hermann Grieb. Their Blue Sensation used a restored 1889 Patek Philippe split-seconds movement. The profile says the collaboration later came to a natural end in 2026.
What makes Benzinger’s watchmaking distinctive?
His work emphasizes visible, hand-finished decoration. Rather than treating a movement or dial only as a functional component, Benzinger uses pattern, engraving and openwork to make its surfaces and construction part of the watch’s visual character.
Rank #2
- Guilloché: A decorative pattern made by cutting repeated lines or motifs into a surface, traditionally with an engine-turning machine. It creates texture and changing reflections on a dial or movement plate.
- Hand engraving: Cutting designs into metal by hand, adding individual detail to components or surfaces.
- Skeletonisation: Removing material from a movement’s plates or bridges to expose more of the mechanism. The openings must be shaped without compromising the parts’ function or strength.
- Flinqué enamel: Translucent or semi-transparent enamel layered over a guilloché surface, allowing the underlying pattern to remain visible beneath the colour.
Oracle Time places Benzinger’s commissions in the orbit of Chronoswiss, IWC, Moritz Grossmann and Glashütte Original. That range illustrates how a specialist finisher’s work can appear in watches associated with different makers; it does not mean every watch from those brands uses his work.

The GAP series brings Benzinger’s decorative finishing together with movements developed in collaboration with Austrian watchmaker Habring². In Oracle Time’s account, the division of work is central: Habring² developed the calibre to Benzinger’s specifications, and Benzinger then skeletonised it.
GAP I
Oracle Time says the GAP I launched in 2022. Its movement was built by Habring² to Benzinger’s specifications and then skeletonised by Benzinger, making the exposed architecture and finishing central to the watch.
GAP 2
Described by Oracle Time as a 2025 successor, the GAP 2 adds a power-reserve indicator and a guilloché three-quarter plate, giving the movement a more traditional appearance when viewed from the back. Oracle Time reported a price of EUR 14,900 in 2026. That is a dated report, not a verified current retail offer; confirm price and availability with an authorized seller.

Is Pforzheim known for watchmaking?
Yes—as part of a broader heritage of jewellery, watchmaking, precision work and design. The City of Pforzheim’s visitor publication, Discovering Pforzheim, connects the city’s historic jewellery and watchmaking industries with continuing local strengths in high-precision work and design. It provides regional context, not evidence that Pforzheim currently rivals Glashütte as a watchmaking centre.
Oracle Time also names Laco, Stowa and Archimede in its discussion of Pforzheim’s watchmaking context, but the profile does not establish their current manufacturing footprints. Benzinger’s career is best understood as one notable example of the city’s craft tradition, not a proxy for the whole industry. The visitor publication is available from Stadt Land Enz / City of Pforzheim.
