A mechanical watch turns stored spring energy into a steady sequence of hand movements. The crown or an automatic rotor winds a mainspring; as it unwinds, gears carry its power to an escapement, which meters the release and works with a balance wheel and hairspring to regulate the pace.
How energy travels through a mechanical watch
The mechanism can be followed in one line: crown or rotor → mainspring in the barrel → wheel train → escapement → balance and hairspring → hands. Each stage has a different job: storing energy, transmitting it, controlling its release, regulating its pace, or displaying the time.

- Winding stores energy. Turning the crown on a manual watch, or the rotor’s motion on an automatic watch, tightens the mainspring.
- The barrel releases that energy. The mainspring sits inside the barrel. As it unwinds, it turns the barrel and supplies power to the wheel train.
- The wheel train transmits power. Meshing wheels and pinions carry the barrel’s motion onward. Their gear ratios change rotational speeds so the hands can turn at their required rates.
- The escapement meters the power. The escape wheel interacts with a pivoting pallet fork. The fork alternately locks and releases the wheel, allowing it to advance in small increments while giving impulses to the balance.
- The balance regulates the pace. The balance wheel swings back and forth with its fine balance spring, also called a hairspring. The escapement supplies energy to sustain that oscillation; the balance’s rate, in turn, controls how quickly the escape wheel advances.
- The moving train drives the display. The gears ultimately turn the hands to show the time.
The escapement and balance are linked in a feedback relationship, not a one-way chain: the escapement keeps the balance oscillating, and the balance sets the pace at which the escapement lets the gear train move. Fondation Haute Horlogerie describes the principle this way: “The escape wheel maintains the swinging motion of the balance wheel and the balance wheel determines the rate at which the escape wheel advances.” Fondation Haute Horlogerie explains the mechanism.

What changes between manual and automatic watches?
The winding input changes; the basic energy and regulation system does not. In both types, the mainspring stores energy in the barrel and powers the same spring-to-gear-to-escapement-to-regulator chain.

| Type | How it is wound | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| Manual | Turning the crown winds the mainspring. | The mainspring and barrel power the wheel train, escapement, balance, and display. |
| Automatic | Movement of the wearer’s arm turns a rotor, also called an oscillating weight, which winds the mainspring. | The same mainspring-and-barrel system supplies the movement. |
The crown also connects to the hand-setting mechanism when pulled out. Winding and setting are separate jobs: winding supplies stored energy, while setting changes the hands’ position.
Why does a mechanical watch tick?
In the escapement described here, the pallet fork repeatedly locks and releases the escape wheel. This divides the train’s motion into small increments and delivers impulses to the balance. That repeated interaction produces the familiar ticking sound. The escapement’s purpose is not simply to make a sound; it meters the release of energy so the balance can regulate the movement. Fondation Haute Horlogerie puts it succinctly: “The escapement releases power in regular portions so that the time can be divided and measured.”

What the mainspring, gears, escapement, and balance each do
- Mainspring and barrel: store and release the movement’s energy.
- Wheel train: transmits power and establishes the rotations used to move the hands.
- Escapement: meters the train’s release and transfers impulses to the balance.
- Balance and hairspring: oscillate together to regulate the pace of the escapement.
- Hands: display the time through the motion delivered by the train.
This distinction matters when describing timekeeping: the mainspring supplies energy, but it does not by itself determine the watch’s rate. Regulation comes from the balance-and-hairspring oscillator working with the escapement.
How many parts and jewels does a mechanical watch have?
The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH says a standard mechanical watch has around 130 components, with complications adding more. That is a general figure, not a fixed count for every design. The FH also says a standard hours-minutes-seconds mechanical watch should in principle contain at least fifteen jewels. It presents this as general guidance, not an absolute rule applying to every movement design. Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH: mechanical watches.

In watch movements, jewels are synthetic sapphire bearings used to reduce friction and wear. They support moving parts; they are not decorative gemstones in the ordinary sense.
What a COSC accuracy figure does—and does not—mean
Fondation Haute Horlogerie describes a −4 to +6 seconds-per-day criterion for a COSC-certified mechanical movement. This figure applies to that certification context; it is not a general accuracy claim for all mechanical watches, certified or otherwise. A watch’s performance should not be inferred from this criterion alone unless its certification status and the relevant testing context are known. Fondation Haute Horlogerie’s mechanical-watch explanation.
