How does a basic date display handle a short month?
A basic date mechanism advances the date by one position each day through a 31-position cycle. After a 30-day month, it will ordinarily show 31; after February, it will continue through the remaining positions. The wearer has to correct the display so it matches the new month. It is a date indication, not a mechanism that independently identifies each month’s length.

How does an annual calendar know which months have 30 days?
An annual calendar uses a mechanical program linked to its month indication to distinguish 30-day months from 31-day months. It can advance from the 30th directly to the first of the next month when appropriate. February remains outside that usual 30/31-day distinction, so the owner generally makes one correction each year at February’s end. The term “annual” describes this yearly correction, not a calendar that never needs setting.

One documented mechanism: a four-year cam
A. Lange & Söhne describes one perpetual-calendar design built around a 48-step cam that turns once every four years. A finger follows the cam’s profile: recesses of different depths represent 30-day months, February, and leap February, while the cam’s outer circumference represents a 31-day month. The depths tell the mechanism how far to advance the calendar. This explains that maker’s construction; other perpetual calendars need not use the same arrangement.
What does “perpetual” mean in the Gregorian calendar?
Perpetual calendars follow a programmed calendar rule, not every future exception automatically. Under the Gregorian calendar, years divisible by 100 are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400. That means February 2100 has 28 days, despite the usual four-year leap-year pattern. A. Lange & Söhne notes that the cited calendar family requires correction for this exception. The correction point can depend on the movement, so consult the instructions for the specific watch rather than assuming all perpetual calendars behave identically.

Rolex’s 2026 Perpetual Padellone is described by the manufacturer as an annual calendar: it differentiates 30-day from 31-day months and requires adjustment once per year when February turns to March. Here, “Perpetual” is part of the product name; the calendar behavior described is annual, not perpetual-calendar leap-year tracking.
